He was opening for Girl Talk at Cornell University. Girl Talk was AMAAAZING in concert, but as a hardcore wu tang fan I felt really hurt and weird. The GZA may have been really high or something, but he kinda stood around, skipped some of his lyrics, and looked like he didn't want to be there. This was reinforced by his consistent checking of his watch and his on stage discussion with a stage manager during the concert. I went to the concert mostly to see one of musics amazing lyricists, and was mostly disappointed. Was he dissapointed himself that after 20 years of hard work, he's opening for a mix artist? Is he sad that despite his dedication and hard work to make quality lyrics, his music isn't mainstream and purchased to the same extent that crappier, lower quality rap is? Or was he just not feeling it? I didn't know, I want to know, but all in all it was a sad day for wu tang fans.
Put yourself in his shoes. Rap legend opening for a dj in upstate new york for a bunch of rich, smart, white kids. If I were him, Id sing one song and would have hopped right back on the thruway and go back to the city.
Thats a good point. I think it's partially that, and partially that their music is out of most young peoples listening range because of it's age. When me or any other college kid were between the ages of 1 and 5, wu tang hit the streets. Some kids knew the lyrics, most didn't.
i dunno, i saw all of wu-tang awhile back at bumbershoot in seattle... it was one of the best concerts i've been to... despite the predominantly white audience there seemed to be a good amount of liquor spraying by the wu, and they seemed really into it.
maybe you caught GZA on a bad day?
my friend was supposed to interview Nas, but Nas took a nap instead... maybe GZA/Genius was just Sick/Tired...
He probably didnt want to be there because either he just didnt feel like it was his place to be or because he didnt want to perform for a bunch of white kids who probably more than half of them didnt know who the hell he was.
i saw wu open up for rage against machine long time ago.
11 years now that i think about it. im a big fan and it was one of the most disappointing shows ive ever seen.
no energy, singing wrong verses, steppin all over each other.
And I guess they're hot and cold preforming, it's probably all about the vibe. Anyone see the rock the bells concert, I was really thinking about going to it last summer and I heard it's off the chizzzaaaaain. Might go this year.
