Just got accepted to UBC and am trying to decide where to spend the next four years of my life. I was wondering if anyone could give me info on the dorms, nightlife etc.

Also where should I get season pass to (Grouse, Cypress or Seymour) when I ski about 50/50 park and all mountain?

never lived in res, but if you want night life it can be found in Van, but the scene gets old and full of chachis.

For riding the easiest would be to grouse, but personally I like seymour.

so for me I got a whis and seymour pass to get my fix.

umm this isn't really related ... but can anyone give me advice on whether i should commute by car or bus to ubc next year ... i live in north van and am wondering if bussing will take too much time??

from north van the bus will take about an hour and a half and you'd save the environment :). Parking on campus is super expensive so you won't want to do that. but what you could do is, drive your car to Marine drive and hop on the bus 5 mins from campus.

^ how do you have your choice? are you sure you don't just put down which one is your first, second, third choice? that doesn't actually mean you get pick number one. assuming you're looking between vanier and totem, i actually don't know what i'd do. vanier is definitely newer (aka nicer), but it's not as much fun; you'll prolly end up going to totem a lot.
as for night life, there are bars on and near campus, frat parties, beaches, etc. so you won't get bored. if you do you can go downtown till you've had enough of the granville scene.

yeah im goin to totem as well. i got a grouse pass and im gettin a whis pass. may get one at seymour purely cuz they stepped it up this year but im not sure.

Haha yeah, what Andrew said. I think he got in a dozen days skiing last year, compared to over 80 senior year. Your ski season is more or less over.

But yeah, it all comes down to how well you want to do in your first year. You can theoretically ski as much as you want...

haha shit, that was supposed to be "yeah, you'll be able to get 25 days in easy". but my caps was on and my backspace key decided to submit instead of erase. anyways i got like 13 last year but I was a loser about it so. haha. lemme know if you need any of my first year shit, i have the answer keys to both the physics text books and a few others I think.. youre gonna be doing this lame-ass homework shit called MasteringPhysics and for Phys153 its super retarded hard, so its good to do the problems and then check your answers with the key before submitting it and potentially getting docked points for a wrong answer. adds up at the end of the year, if you play your cards right you learn and get a free 10% at the end of the year. just make sure you actually try the problems 'em haha half the kids I knew last year waited till an hour before it was due and just pumped answers out of the answer key during class. then get destroyed come test-time

Anyone have free days in their schedule? I managed to get Thursdays off, second term, so i'm super stoked. Hopefully I have time to ski Thursdays, Saturdays + Sundays, plus a week night every week or two.
Anyone else have Thursdays by chance? I may or may not have vehicle access, but would be down to pitch in gas money.

Anyone know what the Whistler pass situation will be? I'm assuming at least blackouts during the olympics. What about paralympics, etc.? Will the student pass be reduced because of the limits on when we can go?

I got Grouse, and plan on doing Whistler probably.

So stoked for two week reading break in February!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll be up after school hopefully as many weekdays as possible and as much on the weekend as hockey lets me.
no car so I'd be getting up to grouse by bus.
as for whistler, I gotta assume that whistler has blackouts but grouse is really selling the fact that they don't.
hit me up during the season if you've got free time.

I have every 2nd thursday and every friday off in both terms and every tuesday in 2nd term as well. A lot of that will actually end up being library time, but I might make a whis trip once in a while if I can find a floor to sleep on. The thing is, if I drive I also need a driveway to park in because there is no public parking this year. So I expect I might end up taking day trips by bus, which is pretty terrible, but there it is. If anyone wants to come up with a better plan let me know.

ya, shit. I thought the public lots were still going to be available??? i heard talk of them being turned into pay parking, like $5 for the day or something, which sucks, but is still better than busing. I know they are paving them, which sucks, so charging wouldn't surprise me, but I haven't actually heard any official word of cost and timing.

As I understand it there will be ZERO public parking in Whistler next season including day lots. Well, including everything. The only way to get a parking spot will be to either rent a hotel room or know someone who has a place. In other words, you're pretty much stuck parking and riding from squampton. Which is a total mess that everyone should probably be more pissed off about than they appear to be.

Shit, that is ridiculous, and if I'd known, I would have been really pissed.

Not that I don't trust you, but where did you learn this?

It just doesn't make sense to me. Even during the olympics, what will they do with the day lots? In like December, or March, or any time other than February, I really don't expect it to be much different than any other year, so why wouldn't they have parking available for day trippers?

Here, this is from the email they sent out in March.

As you may be aware, the single biggest challenge will be that parking will be substantially reduced in Whistler next February. In fact, all the skier day lots 1 to 8 will be closed to the public.

For in-resort residents and guests, a vastly enhanced public transit system will ensure that a bus will pick you up within a short walk from your home or accommodation every five to ten minutes throughout the day. New routes and 135 buses (increased from the current 39) running 24 hours a day will help to ensure that your commute into the village and to the mountains will be as convenient as possible. Squamish and Pemberton residents will also have access to this same bus system as a network of buses will bring skiers and commuters in to Whistler daily.

For our Lower Mainland and Washington guests, travel will be a little more involved. If you have a place to stay in Whistler, you will be asked to avoid peak hours, but you will be able to drive to Whistler along Highway 99 and proceed to your accommodation. Carpooling will help everyone out, as parking will be limited to driveways and private hotel parking lots. Once here, you’ll need to jump on that enhanced bus system to access the Village and the mountains.

For day visitors, your options will involve private bus transportation and likely a park-and-ride scenario. Details regarding the capacity and schedules of the buses are still being worked out. Please be assured that we are working with our partners in the resort to maximize the capacity on these buses for you to have the opportunity to experience Whistler during the Games.

PS that just says feb but my understanding is that it will actually be before during the run-up, and to some extent after. So from early jan to march I wouldn't count on being able to park up there at all.

okay. well, the games don't start until mid February, so I think it would be safe to assume parking until Feb 1. Good news is, there's no full on blackout, even with a student pass, as I thought there would be. Runs will probably be pretty busy, but will be open to us. The price is back down to 400 again this year too, which is nice.

  • Feb 1 - Mar 21: no access to rest of P2, P3, P4

Franz's Trail merchants open for business throughout Games time, including delivery access.

Feb 1 - Mar 27, 2010: venue perimeter established from the Timing Flats area to the Creekside base area.

Mar 22 - Apr 30, 2010: decommissioning period.

Parking in Whistler will be tight from begining of February until the start of March, and not existent over the 2 weeks of the games, but the rest of the season it will be busy but normal.  The reality is though, that if you can get up here the mountain is going to be over 90% open and not as many people out there.  Also the student pass price has dropped this year to $399.

Found this info on the site-- so looks like you could get 6 days + free parking at the UBC Lodge for 25 a night if you're a student. After that.. need a floor haha.


The following instructions apply to UBC students with valid UBC student cards only.

WHAT: Sale of bed reservations for the UBC Whistler Lodge for the following dates: For Febuary 13 - 22, 2009 (see Reservations, Rates & Availability page for all other dates)

WHERE: Room 214/216 on the 2nd floor of the Student Union Building

WHEN: January 23, 2009, 8:45 am - 12:00 pm- IMPORTANT - read the following ticket distribution system information.

HOW: This is a cash sales event only.

THERE'S MORE:

  • Limit of 6 tickets per person (1 person for 6 nights or 6 people for 1 night or any other combination)
  • The person in line can only buy 6 tickets
  • You may purchase tickets for UBC students and non UBC students.
  • When you arrive at the lodge, you will be charged the general public rate if you do not show your valid UBC student ID card. Only UBC students with valid UBC student ID cards get the UBC student rate.

Any tickets left will be sold through the bookings representative in room 230B (2nd floor Sub).

This ticket event will use the random number distribution system that TicketMaster uses. The purpose of the random number distribution is to insure that all customers have the same chances of being first in line, eliminating the need to camp out. This policy also helps to insure customer safety and provides for effective crowd control. A numbered ticket does not guarantee you a ticket...only a place in line.

To purchase tickets please read the following instructions.

  1. Sequentially numbered tickets will be issued from 8:45 am - 9:00 am. If you arrive after numbered tickets have been issued, you must go to the "late line" behind those with numbered tickets.
  2. ONE numbered ticket per customer and the person has to be in-person to get a ticket, no friends holding tickets, etc.
  3. A numbered ticket does not guarantee you a ticket, only a place in line.
  4. Your numbered ticket will only be honored at the Big Ticket Sale you've line up for.
  5. Numbered tickets are nontransferable.
  6. The starting number will be announced at 9:00 am.
  7. The starting number will be drawn randomly by a customer. The customer holding the ticket that matches the starting number drawn will be the first in line (e.g. If #'s 1-250 were issued and number 10 was drawn, the line would start with 10, then 11, 12, 13 through 250 and then 1-9).
  8. When the starting number is announced, the line will shift accordingly.
