How would legalizing pot happen?

I know almost everyone on this site is for legalizing marijuana, whether you smoke it or not. and we've all seen the arguements for an against, and it really shouldnt be a question that it should be legalzing

but heres what i was thinging. How?

Right now, it is only legalized under medical purposes in some states, some states have also decriminalized it.

so if it were to be completely legal, would it just be medical? so its like percription drugs then, its illegal to have (sevarity depending on the drug). would it be legal for recreational use? if so, they drug companies may not be able to profit off of it as much then, which is one of the main reasons for it. how about age? 18 like tobacco? 21 like alcohol? can people grow their own?


there are SOOOOO MANY VARIABLES

i completely agree that it should be legal, but how? i cant figure out a way that we all benifit and so does the government (which would be the main reason for them to legalize is for their benifit). lets here your plans

Iinteresting thread but you're looking at this the wrong way. If it was decided it would be legalized it would happen. It isnt the variables that matter but the decision as whole. People can make anything happen.

No, i mean lets say:
Ok, we're legalizing weed, but now to what extent?

for example
Alcohol is legal to buy and consume:
only if you are over 21
you cannot drive under the influence
so on and so forth...

im talking about what would the laws regulating pot be? this is the after legalization of pot...

well i think that if it did get legalized it might suck
cause tabacco companies would start putting more chemicals in it
so it would be more like ciggarettes which would just suck
if they did legalize it it be tough and i think if they did it should be sold almost pure or whatver
but no new chemicals like ciggarette shit
and id say they would have to put a age on it like 18? or 21 maybe?
the only thing that would suck if weed got taken over by tabbaco companies and just fucked it up

Some states have started proposals making it so you have to be 21 to smoke. This legalization could happen very soon, it would put our economy and our country out of this economic shit hole we're in.

My 2 cents..

..If it were to be actually "legal" I think the age to buy should be 18 like all other smoking products.

..I think it should be treated like alcohol in the fact that you can't drive while "intoxicated/high"

..Should be taxed, and taxed high like tobacco

..Possibly not for sale everywhere like tobacco/cigarettes are now...maybe only cretin spots..like a state store for liquor.


This would also NOT get our country out of the poor house..it might help some..but this is NOT a cure for our recession.

Are you kidding me? California pulls in 11 mil just from medical marijuana tax, think if all weed was taxed how much money the government would pull? and how much they would save on prosecuting it. Its just like when they legalized alcohol again after the great depression, it basically made our economy strong again.

i think it would be great. it would open up TONS of jobs for the unimployed and i would rather buy  this weed (if its pure) cuz who knows what the drug dealers are puttin into our bud you know? but if the government sold their seized/govermnet grown fire,cryp, 1 hit wonder bud i would buy that in a heart beat. Im sure the US gov has some dank shit locked up somewhere

i was watching cnn the other day and they were respectfully discussing it instead of debating for a change. they said it would be about the same as alcohol, you wouldnt be able to legally smoke until youre 21 and no driving baked. on a side note, dont call it pot. you sound old.

I'm curious what you have to say on the subject Nomen. I'm currently working on a research paper involving the economics of legalization of cannabis and my conclusion seems to be different than yours.

What factors are you considering when you make this statement? There is so much good that could come from the legalization of cannabis, industrial hemp included.

Hemp would not only stop millions of dollars from being imported from Canada (which sucks for you but is great for the U.S.) but would create an entire industry out of one plant. I'm sure you know just all the amazing things that hemp can do.

But simply legalizing marijuana would stop billions being spent each year arresting and jailing people using a substance less harmful than nicotine and tobacco. The court systems and jails would be less crowded, police forces would have more time to spend on actual crimes rather than shooting defenseless college kids with less than a gram of marijuana.

And think of the businesses that would be created. Coffee shops similar to Amsterdam's would spring up all over the country over night. No more would this money be going to shady dealers, or better yet, let the criminal dealers become honest hard working members of society and let them start their own businesses.

And I haven't even talked about how much the government is going to run off with in this situation. They are going to be jerking off to the amount of money they will make with simply passing a bill into law. California is currently trying to bring a bill into law to make marijuana legal and analysts project it could make the state over a billion dollars in taxes.

I just honestly have not come across a single good argument why marijuana shouldn't be legal in the countless hours of research I've done. It seems the only argument people are even willing to use these days is one of morality, and I can tear that to pieces within seconds.

You can't smoke everywhere in Amsterdam. In fact marijuana is still illegal there. It's just tolerated to a very small extent.

What they do is tolerate it only in the coffee shops, if you step outside and light up you could potentially get arrested.

This is all because Holland acknowledges the difference between hard and soft drugs. Although they don't feel like they should make another drug legal, they still understand that having dealers with hard and soft drugs causes a problem.

So they let marijuana in the coffee shops so they know that is where people get there cannabis from. Not some shady dealer who could potentially introduce a soft drug user into harder drugs. That's why Holland's heroin problem hasn't increased significantly in 20 years where almost all of the rest of the western world has seen an increase around 100-1000%

what kind of taxes can be put on marijuana? is it just sin taxes or are there others?
i didnt think they could tax a plant by itself
and that the tobacco itself wasnt taxed, but all the other stuff that gets put into cigarettes

thats what im saying. for all we know, they could make it harder to get, more expensive, and more illegal if you dont fit a certain criteria. so how do we do it right so thats it sbetter for pot smokers, and better for the us...

I think if it were totally legalized, anyone that smokes good herb would not buy it from any major corporations or if tobacco companies got their finger in it.  The commercial bud now, (shwag, mexi, brick, ditch, beasters) is already pretty low quality and really not good for you, the way it's grown, processed, and shipped. 
Most high quality bud comes from fairly small-time knowledgeable growers. Other high quality is grown in medical farms mostly in cali on a larger scale.
Legalizing it would drive prices wayyy down, and allow everyone and their mother to grow themselves which is fairly easy.
Even if it was controlled like the Dutch Model, coffee shops and such would be a more than welcome way to obtain weed. Obviously like restaurants, quality can vary based on the chef and management.
I usually don't buy my food in a gas station, why would I buy my bud there? Just because it's there and it's cheap doesn't mean the quality is to my liking. So I really wouldn't worry about big companies adding anything to bud, if they did, don't buy it.
I am sure there will be a market for shitty tobacco like pot, always has been, always will be, but it won't affect you if you don't let it.
Legalize it, the world won't become perfect, but it will become better in more ways than it will become worse.

So far, all government supported weed (medical) has been super dank so i disagree. Of course the government will tax it, but thats the main reason when it gets legalized. It'll be worth it.

It's yet to be seen how a federal tax would be implemented but California is trying to create a pilot program where a flat tax of $50/ounce would be used.

And I'm not really sure what you mean by not taxing a plant. Let me try to explain more. Of course they won't be able to tax personally grown cannabis. Only the cannabis purely grown as a commodity will be taxed. Which believe it or not is still going to be an enormous amount. Currently marijuana is California's #1 cash crop grossing about 13 billion/year. The second place of milk and dairy comes in about 7-8 billion.

the prohibition was the start of organized crime, drug dealing, running from the cops, dirty dancing, and nascar.

^it started some fucked up things...

i had this talk with my drivers ed teacher who used to be a history teacher. he said look what happened with the last prohibition, its stupid, weeds isnt bad, and being illegal is only making things worse

I am just trying to see where you are coming from, if that is a serious comment. Nothing about your side of the flawed two party system we have. Just a general rationale why you think spending the amount of money we spend  locking up stoners is a justified use of tax dollars.  Political parties aside, I can't find many reasons. well if there is an age limit on it then why would we need that?

in your perfect world, no one drinks till their 21...

but the truth is is that they do drink before 21, they also smoke. and i know lots of kids that are great students that drink and smoke. i know a lot of kids that drink and smoke and dont do well. its how shit works. whether they want to drink and smoke and do good or bad in school is their choice

i agree 100% but the fact of the matter is that the american educational system is a joke. i think we need to make it a lot harder to get a high school diploma and (as much as i hate pot) i think it would be a good reward/motivator. a ton of smart kids amount to nothing because they have no motivation. i think that allowing for meeting academic criteria and very harsh punishment for breaking the rules that would go with that would make america much smarter than it is now

I think what America holds dearest is freedom. Also America has always been progressive in changing laws according to will of the people. This is why we have amendments, and public policy. If you get a chance check out http://www.leap.cc/ . It is an organization formed of police officers, judges, and lawyers that think the drug war is a terrible waste of money, and resources.  These people have seen the harm this war cause first hand, from the side of enforcement and prosecution.

A lot of the behavior you dislike is an effect of prohibition, not cannabis. I also believe in upholding the law, and I can guarantee smoking herb is the only law I have broken in 8 years, (maybe speeding on accident, but never on purpose.)

Most of the laws were put on the books during a dark time of American racism, to help keep black people and migrant workers in jail. Most of your response is opinion and I don't see any facts backing it up.

I can tell you feel passionate about law enforcement, and i respect that. It seems like you may have family or close friends in the profession. I think everyone should be able to walk down the street and want to hug a cop. The truth is, for many reasons, a lot of the public feels often bullied or threatened by police.
Sadly as we all know, not every cop is a great person. For the millions of awesome officers, doing thousands of great things day in and day out with out so much as a thank you. How ever the ones that are bad people, they would be bad people in any profession, it's who they are. When these bad people get caught doing bad things with a badge on, the whole world is going to hear about it. Americans love gossip. I can tell you I do have family and many friends that are currently in law enforcement, and everyone of them respects my personal choices, and I am open to them about it.
I was looking a little bit more for proof it should not be legal, when the affects are less harmful in many ways compare to tobacco and alcohol.

it has nothing to do with the drug itself. the fact is that it (more accurately the obssesion/love of it) is having a detrimental effect on society and legalizing it would make it worse. if legalized it should be a priviledge, not a right. the economy will fix itself in a few years, the sad excuse for a public education system will remain a joke until we motivate those dragging it down

yeah but the more the government gets involved the more money the will want out of it, hence, like most establishd production, quality gets worse when they become money hungry, i reckon the government will keep the price up but try make production cheaper by mixing other shit in it to and use less weed

I agree with you about public education.  It blows. The truth is education is a choice, anyone that wants an education in this country can get one. Obviously quality varies everywhere. The fact that kids are not motivated isn't an excuse. Our country is one of the easiest to obtain a higher education, regardless of wealth, race, region and religion.  I am saying this in comparison to the rest of the world. Dumb ass kids today refuse to learn or take advantage of how easy it is to get into college are making a personal choice , to not accept becoming a better person.
No one is teaching the value of knowledge or education. Any value seen by kids in education is usually for the financial reward of obtaining a career in a skilled profession.  This really boils down to being selfish. Few and far between are those that want to know as much as they can about anything they can.  Few and far between do people want to change the world for the better. It's fucking hard. The internet is everywhere, Libraries have been around for quite some time last time i check. Information is free.
Most things are ok in moderation. To single out one intoxicant because of the love/passion behind it is crazy.  Many people are obsessed over many thing that aren't good for you if you abuse it. I know people that looovvee beer, their world revolves around it.  Some are normal , hold healthy jobs and relationships. Others seem to hate their life, and can't go from waking up in the morning to brushing their teeth without cracking a beer. But it's not just intoxicants that can be abused, video games, food, sex, skiing internet.
These legal, "fun" things create the majority of people that are dragging this country down.  Kids dropping out of high school because some kid makes money gaming,  fat people, people that spread venerial infections, ski bums such as myself. My point is prohibition does not curb use whatsoever.
Humans can be selfish, they enjoy things that make them happy. People that abuse whatever your posion is, reap the consequences of it. They loose family, friends, activities that used to bring them joy. Life is full of choices, if mine doesn't personally affect you, you should be mine to make.

I do have one counter argument for you

while drinking is legal, it is obviously illegal to be drunk while doing certain things.  You cannot be driving while drink, you cannot work while drunk, etc. and there is a way to regulate this.  When someone is drunk you can usually smell them, they are acting drunk, and you can breathalyze them and prove that they are drunk.

now with weed, you cannot tell when someone is high like you can when someone is drunk.  Yes you can argue that someones eyes are red, or that they aren't talking as much, or just sitting on the couch staring off into the distance, but these could be for any number of reasons.  There is no "breathalyzer" in order to tell if someone is high or not.  Even if there was, there would be no tell tale signs on when you should "breathalyze" a person to tell if they are high, like there is with alcohol.

Now that being said, you wouldn't want a doctor to operate on you while drunk, would you want one to while he or she was high?  I certainly would not want someone who is high to cut me up, or even diagnose me.  I would not want someone who is high to approve the blueprints to build my house, to design a highway system, to pass a law, to operate a crane, etc. you get the the point.  Based on what I said in the above paragraphs, how would you regulate this?

while not every person would do this, since there would be no real way of regulating who was high and who was not, people all over would be getting high and doing their every day jobs, duties, etc.

this is my argument against legalizinng weed

the government doesnt grow the weed, they hire certified fucking weed growers to grow and sell their weed to cannabis clubs. weed growers love to grow good weed they give a fuck about their product so the weed would be straight dank everywhere
