i'm editing footage filmed on an xl2 and an fx1. obviously i'm looking for the best quality to put out on a dvd, but should i work with a 1080 project size and expand the xl2 footage or work with a standard def 720 size project and reduce the size of the fx1 footage? thanks

i'd say stick to an sd timeline. It's going to be output to sd anyways, correct? unless you're going big time this year and going with bluray or hddvds. An added perk with doing it that way is that due to the fact that you're going to be downsizing the fx1 footage to about 25%, you have a ton of room to play with. So for example if you didnt really particuarly like the composition of one shot, or something was in the corner of it, you could downsize it to say only 45%, and correct for a better composition. It's pretty handy. It'll also allow for pan outs when you never actually did pan out. I used that a couple times in the stash edit for killington when i used some of your footage.
All in all, i'd say if you're exporting to dvd anyways there are a lot more perks to downres the hd footage than to upres the sd footage. Although ultimately it's your call. The downside of downresing all of the fx1 footage will be render time, seeing as your footage is mostly fx1. And the xl2 footage upreses pretty nicely for an sd camera, obviously not hd, but its not horrendous.
hope you're having fun sorting through all of that footage.

Whenever i mix HD and SD i always edit in an HD time line, zoom into SD shots and export to 640x360 which is standard def with letter boxing. Of course i only put shit online so i dunno how that would work for a dvd.

really? doesn't the sd footage loose a good bit of quality and sharpness when you do that?

Well when you think about it, when i zoom into the sd footage and export 640x360 then its just in SD but croped to 16:9 so it looks decent.

Understood. this next part is all speculation, but wouldn't the compressor's downres'd sd footage not look as good as sd footage that is simply compressed? same bitrate and everything. Again, all speculation, but thats just always what i've thought about it.
