your drop in is crucial, when you come up the to the pipe its like stepping in and sticking to the wall, thats how you maintain speed, you want to keep your chest up and shin pressure. pump your arms through the transitions, when you get to the lip you want to pop, if you don't then your going to deck, take it slow until you get the feel of it and dont worry about spinning.
Thats one fucked up pipe that you need to pop in not to deck.
Less pop is better because it allows you to come down on the walls of the pipe and not land in the middle of it, making landings smoother and easier. However if your pipe is under vert you'll have to pop a bit.
I ride a 22 foot super pipe used for olympic qualifiers and national level competitions, trust me when I say you shouldn't have to pop as long as you keep forward pressure and your pipe is vert.
My pipe is def not vert.
I'm going to probably hit up Mammoth's next week though I've never tried it before.
I find when I was going really flat in the pipe it helped if I thought about not popping. It will happen either way whether you think about doing it or not, so trying to minimize that helps. Popping isn't what gives you your height, because if you pop where are you popping off of? Popping at the top of the pipe will put you in the bottom when you land. That said, you definitely don't want to be sucking up the wall, just try to stay stable and forward when coming out of the pipe. If you're decking then, as the above poster suggested, a little pop would be a good thing.
I ride pipe at COP, I live in calgary but ski at pano on weekends.
Wasn't trying to bitch you out there, sorry if my previous post came off a little offensive.
