Anyone Majoring in Architecture?...

I've been accepted to a fairly good architecture program and I'm pretty sure I want to do it but I still have some questions...I've heard the first year in most programs is really hard. Is this true? Are you happy with your decision to take architecture?

In the end, it doesn't really matter, whether it is 5 year professional or 4 year non-prof, you're going to be working a shitton.
But it's excellent stuff if you enjoy it.

My best friend (an ex lol) went to Pratt and the amount of time you must dedicate to your work is intense...be prepared to never sleep regularly over the next 5 years. She is currently in Rome and has not regretted it once though, so sounds worth it in her regard.

I was in architecture for a year and a half at MSU Bozeman, but left because I didn't see it taking me where I wanted to go.  That being said....

If you are worried about workload, you really, REALLY need to reconsider what you want to be studying.  Architecture will consume your life, and if you aren't passionate enough about it to make a commitment to it, you are just wasting your time.  A lot of it.  However, it is an amazing thing to study not only because it is our most accessible art form, but architecture is such a multi-faceted program that you get to do a little of everything along the way.  It's a super cool major to have, but you should be pretty confident that you are prepared and excited to make the commitment.

i have a lot of friends in their first year of architecture here at penn stae, and it blows me away the amount of work that they have. they regularly spend 30-40 hours a week outside of class time in studio when projects are due. apparently they have 3 huge projects due by the end of the semester so i literall sometimes go days without seeing them. its a very work intensive major, and i dont know about other schools but i know here the numbers dwindle fast and often, i think they started with 73 first year architecture students this year and theyre down to under 40. its a very rewarding program however, just be prepared to do a lot of work

schools generally put forth a hard first year to weed out the kids who aren't dedicated to architecture enough to graduate.  you generally have random hard and easier semesters... but yeah no matter what, you will sleep the most random hours.  not to say you wont have fun, it just takes some skill to balance partying and working.

hahaha a couple of my friends friends were architect majors for a year they have some stories... but really its tough and if your not dedicated and willing to spend your time in a studio on saturday nights than you can do it. Give it a try worst thing is that you just pick up a new major.

I'm pretty sure any worthwhile major is going to be difficult man.  Business majors are a dime a dozen, and honestly it's simply because it is easy and anyone can do it....so everyone does it.  Don't let it worry you if it is tough because that would be a great, rewarding major.  People will always need houses man!

well that's another thing, i didn't design a house until the end of my second year, and even then it wasn't very structural / feasible.   i came into school thinking it was going to be very mechanical, focused on structure and accuracy.  architecture at college is more focused on the design process, and you can come up with some really crazy shit.  so i'd say stay away unless you are somewhat creative.

I'm a freshman architecture student at Wentworth in Boston.

I guess it really depends on the kinda person you are. I much rather build something or draw something or design something as a test, rather than study a book and take a test. Not to say there isn't tests just more projects. Like everyone else said its a shit ton of work but if you like building stuff its really interesting stuff. If your in it for money I'd say leave because unless your high up in a big firm chances are you not making a huge amount. I like the hands on approach to learning. What made me decided in the end was walking through one of the studios where the juniors and sophomores were working, seeing all the models and drawing got me really excited about it and after that I was sure I wanted to go arch. With that said I know a lot of kids that switched majors after first semester and even more that aren't coming back next semester.

I suggest checking out the studios where the students work if possible and ask around about their projects that gave me the best feeling of whether I wanted to do it or not.
