Anyone editing AVCHD?

I'm seriously looking at getting a Canon HF S10 which came out this month. I'n my mind it's one of the best thought out cams on the market:

huge filter diameter
24mb/s avchd
8mb still cam
6mb stills while filming
dual flash format
sick lowlight performance
etc.

However, I have zero experience working with AVCHD format and I know it's still relatively iffy with most editors. my specs:

Mac Book Pro
2.33 core2duo
2gb ram
160gb hd
750gb external
final cut pro

Will I be able to (sensibly) handle AVCHD? I can't afford a new laptop for a couple years, but im really in love with this cam and just want to make sure I can edit. Thanks, +K

yeah? You think the ram is the bottleneck? easy enough upgrade there. but other then that I'll have to suffer it out.

That's not true at all, i edited dvcprohd with the same setup for a little bit then i got another gig of ram and its is better but its doable with 2gb.


As for avchd, bleh not exactly the best codec, ive heard from multiple people is not the best. The only good things ive heard about avchd are from the panasonic hmc150.

I edit with avchd. It's fine for me, but then again i'm not a pro. I have 4gb of ram and it runs fine.

Comment? AVCHD is getting better and better with each gen. It's the future of consumer cams along with SSD's.

There are much better codecs than avchd that will always be better than avchd.

I think you are underestimating progression here. AVCHD is nipping at HDV already. When it was still bleeding edge technology just a couple of years ago. It's just nature that industry will usually gravitate to something that is smaller and more efficient. Improvements in compatibility and quality will and have been following.

Well that's a bit different. Full on pro cams are a different beast (and i'm sure very few on here are qualified to comment on). And if AVCHD ever trickles that far up it will be quite perfected by then, but that's doubtful ( Look how long beta was used). But in the consumer and prosumer market, where most of us would be, t's just around the corner.

AVCHD looks nice and all, but I reeaaallly like my p2 workflow, which AVCHD painfully lacks.

The easily accessible, small, reasonably cheap (and getting cheaper), reliable  flash based storage that is associated with AVCHD is better then P2 media. Maybe thats what he means by more convenient?

Your computer will run fine when editing avc footage.  Just max out the memory for a few hundred bucks and you'll be set.  You'd still probably be fine with 2gb of memory for the time being.

And as far as this AVCHD sucks argument goes...  AVCHD is definitely going to be around for a long time.  It's a good codec and it's getting better.  I'd say that after NAB, all the nle's (hint: Final Cut) will have updates to support avchd, much like P2.  In some respects AVCHD/intra trumps DVCproHD, and vice versa.  Don't be so quick to write off avchd!  I'd love to get the hfs10 when it comes out, it's going ot be a killer camera for the price.

Thank you! And the HF S10, should be a killer camera, you're right. Now, if only it had the low light and OIS capabilities of the Sony 520 it would be unbelievable.
