Im running AVG as my anti virus program and something shut off my malware protection this morning. It was fine before I went to class and then after I re-booted it an hour ago my malware setting was off and I cannot get it back on. Wtf does this?
I'm downloading 8.5 right now and I'm gonna run it im just curious to know how this could have happened.

its some new virus that came out not too long ago. there was an article about it on the CNN website. theres like one main computer that controls all the infected "zombie" computers. it shuts down your antivirus protection and starts deleting files. its supposed to try and get you to buy stuff too. if you go to the windows website and download like the latest liveprotection or whatever its supposed to help. also if you can catch the person who made the virus or figure out how to stop it, windows will give you $250,000

So far I haven't been prompted to buy anything. After a bunch of fussing around I was able to get the new AVG installed and I'm running a virus scan right now. AVG says that all components are running but Windows Security Center says that AVG is reporting that my Malware protection is turned off. wtf?

download MalwareBytes and do a full scan. Takes care of just about everything out there and great compliment to AVG

You should unplug the infected computer from the internet (so the virus can't get remote instructions), then download Malwarebytes with another comp, burn the installer to a cd, start up the infected comp in safe mode (if possible), and install and run Malwarebytes from the cd.
I hope it didn't affect your core windows files (explorer.exe, winlogon.exe, etc.), because you're fucked then, nothing I have found can fix that.

Thanks for the advice so far. So I ran a virus check and just found a bunch of tracking cookies etc. My AVG says everything is running fine but Windows is still saying that Malware is turned off and I can't get it to turn back on. Any ideas of how I can do this? Im also gonna download that program
