A question for people in college

How often do you have to write 8+ page research papers or any type paper?

well, I have my first 8+ this semester (my second semester of my freshman year) however I've written lots of 3-4 and 6-8's. It depends a great deal on your classes and your professors. Sometimes a professor will limit how many pages you can write about a topic which can be just as difficult. Some classes are more about writing papers, others are more about solving problems, and others still are about writing up lab reports or writing programs. (all depending on the department the class is in be it Math, Science, History, English, Technology etc)

I usually end up having to write one or two research papers a semester.  I've averaged maybe 5 papers a semester for other classes?  I'm an economics and mathematics major.

also, I have yet to write a purely "research" paper. A lot of your papers will require you to argue something, or to explain something as it applies to something else. so don't expect to just find info, process it, and put it back on paper with a slight twist on it.

In my state we are required to do at least one 8+ research paper to graduate and then make  product(whatever that is) that is related to our paper next year. I had read that college was nothing but research and writing but this thread seems to suggest otherwise. Of course my english teacher supervising the paper said that we will probably get lucky the first 2 years of college and not have to do a lot. Anyone getting their masters or doctorate and have any insight on this?

5-10 page lab report weekly
3 page essays every couple weeks
A couple pages of program analysis every other week.

And that's definitely on the light side since I'm a Physics/CS major and I don't have any gen ed classes this semester. If you're doing anything with humanities expect a bunch.

Im a sophomore business major and have written ZERO. Two were 6 pages tho. I think it depends on your major pretty much, EX: education majors, from what I understand, write a whooole lot.

Depends on your major and what classes you are taking.


I've written a decent amount of papers, but that is because I just finished up a persuasive communications class and a history class. I would say that you should assume that you will write a few but depending on your major, not much.

depends a lot on what your major is.  Im junior engineering major, and I have to write my first 8+ page paper this semester and its in one of my elective classes.

but a ton of papers ranging from 3-6 pages. (literally a whole ton worth of them)

not a lot freshman and sophmore year.  mostly just 5 pagers for english 101 102 etc.  jr. and sr. year figure an 8 to 10 pager for every class that isn't a gen ed bullshit requirement class.  figure 5 pages for those bs classes.  grad school  about a 20 pager for each class.  accounting major.

Never,  haven't had to write any papers so far (first 2 quarters at WWU).  Only because I have been taking classes that don't require papers.  When I'm done with break and go back for spring quarter on Monday I'll have to write a lot of papers, but the biggest will probably be 8 pages or less.

it depends on your field of study really.

It's around one a semester or so thats over 8 pages. they really arent that bad, especially if its something you enjoy. I wrote one on how bad suburbs were planned and such, and it was a super easy paper to research and write because I enjoyed the topic.

im a sophomore at OSU and honestly the writing is easier than highschool was. I did go to a pretty competitive highschool BUT, the thing is in college, the papers are usually about interesting topics, so its much easier to write them, as opposed to some retarded highschool bullshit paper that has no relevance to real life.

Im sure once i get into the harder classes for my major the papers will get more difficult

In my experience, I've written almost every paper double-spaced, but almost every lab report or technical piece (program testing/analysis mostly) has been single spaced, since you use a lot of room with diagrams, graphs, data, etc.

this is why I love engineering, haven't had to do a proper paper since high school. Most are just lab write ups/engineering descriptions, and all of my work is problem based.

Wow I didn't expect these results so far this year I've had six and this is my freshman year and this tri I have atleast two maybe more. Then I would say on average I have one 4-8 page paper a week but papers are pretty easy because they are typically something interesting and that makes them much easier to write.

Maybe four 8-10 page papers, one 20 page paper, and one or two 2-3 page papers a week.  I'm in my second semester and a business major, but my longer papers were for a writing class.  The shorter papers are for economics classes and history classes.

word im in business and we dont have to write to many 8 + but i have had to write a ton of 5+ prolly more then ever in my life but a lot of that is from my gen ed classes... first semester for my business i would have to write two 3 page papers every week but that was because we didnt have tests only written hw... but really you get used to it and now i can crank out a 3 page well written paper in under and hour if i know the material

I'm an architecture major and i've never written any that were longer than 8 pages, but write papers on a weekly basis. You learn how to bullshit stuff and add irrevelant information in college, although i'm not sure what is worse, paper being too short or full of absolute horse shit. but good luck with your paper man

True story. I'm a physics major and the writing sections of out lab writeup cannot be over one page long. Biology on the other hand we were constantly writing 8-12 page labs (that shit was gay as hell).

Like everyone else said, it depends on what classes your taking. The longest paper I have had to write was 8 pages in a English 103 class.

its standard to write in 1.5 - double space, with 12 point font. MLA/APA standards.
i just wrote two last week that were 8-12 pages, due on the same day, and on average i write about 5000 words per class i think. all my english classes are a required minimum 5000 and my sociology classes depend on your teacher, but this semesters one of my papers was 3800 words and the other was 3500 with little essays during the semester too.

if you don't want to write, take math or sciences. you have to do some, but not as much as that.

don't get me wrong...you'll have to do research. but you'll have to use it for certain things. for instance you won't write a paper telling about what happened in a certain battle in WW II. You'll have to decide if it was a decisive victory, why it was important, how it was a pivotal part of a certain strategy, etc.

second semester, still yet to write a paper. the longest thing ive had to write so far was a one page extra credit letter for my oceanography. i definitely have lucked out as far as papaer writing is concerned, but my professors make up for it in other places. i havent taken/dont need to take an english writing class at all, so thats the main reason i havent written anything really. my roommate has had 2 15+ page lab reports and numerous papers for his classes, but my classes just dont seem to have papers in the curriculum.
