Anybody here really good at Bio/Chem?

Because i need to know how methanol is formed. i dont wanna go blind from my home-brew, and i cant exactly figure out how methanol is formed in home brewing.

i dont have a still, so i think im safe because im not making like, 50% or sprits or anything. but if anyone knows how methanol can be avoided, thatd be sick. cuz i may move on to making 40% stuff and then i may run into this shit that makes you blind and retarded.

and i looked on google and all these science websites and it doesnt really tell me how to avoid it in my haggard brewing shit lol

I don't know, but out of interest what are you fermenting?  Rice? Wheat? Millet?

right now i have apples and peaches fermenting

i read that starchy stuff like potatoes and grains can end up in methanol. and i like seeing stuff. i dont wanna be blind

As long as you're careful and your yeast (you're using yeast right?) is only eating sugar you should be fine as far as I know.

Though, unless you are ONLY producing methanol you shouldn't have a problem either. They treat methanol poisoning with ethanol because ethanol has competitive inhibition in your liver with methanol so your body breaks down the methanol much slower and you don't see the toxic effects. As long as your brew has ethanol you should be fine...though don't quote me on that haha.

It won't just make you blind, if you have enough methanol in your system to make you go blind it will kill you. You just go blind first.

I've only home brewed with Millet.  its pretty tasty actually, especially if you throw a little wheat in for flavor.

that sounds terrible dangerous...

its like dirnking rat poison and anti rat poison at the same time. they just cancel out. why drink the rat poison in the first place?

Its not like you drink the methanol on purpose haha. But if you do drink some methanol, the ethanol will protect you.

im not even using a still, or creating anything over 15% for now, so i should be fine i think

and i did know methanol was lethal. but it makes you blind and can cause brain damage too.
