Brake width, +k

so i picked up some bindings and my girl did the same, they are 100 mm brakes....my skis have a waist width of 84 and hers have a width of 81. is it a bad thing to have these wider brakes? it looks like they come in a little when you clamp into the binding but wanted to make sure there isn't any adverse effect on our skiing. i only ask because the bindings came in  either an 80mm or 100mm so we both with the 100 to be on the safe side, cheers.

im guessing that brakes narrower than the skis are wide wont work to well so you probably took the right option, but i dnt believe thhere is anything wrong with that, those brakes arnt really that wide so it should b fine, aslong as they dnt stick out super far i dnt c any reason y it will b a bad thing

You really shouldnt go over about 10-15mm wider as you can get some drag and they are much easier to snag and catch on stuff. Definatly should have gone with 80mm for hers. Yours, you may be able to get away with but I still would have gone 80. You can usually get away with up to 5mm without having to do a rebend. At 4mm wider you would have to only tweak it very slightly. Sorry, i'm sure its not what you want to hear, but I would at least try to trade hers.

well thanks for the help, what exactly do you mean by drag? we're both longtime snowboarder getting into the ski game and when we layed the bindings on the skis  it looks as though there is maybe a 1/4 inch of clearance on each side if that. along with this, when you step into the binding the brake comes pretty far off the ground and comes pretty tight to the binding. it seems as though when they 'eject' it goes to 100mm.....i'm honestly just trying to learn/understand. any help is appreciated.

No problem. Drag as in drag the ground when turning (leaning into it). Also when going switch. If it comes tight I wouldn't worry about it too much. As I said 81mm is pushing it but isn't too bad.

thanks for the info, these bindings are the rossi axial 120's and with the lifter it looks like there should be enough clearance along with the brake coming it when you step in....i've heard too many good things about these bindings that if it becomes an issue for my girl i will just pick her up some smaller brakes and swap them out. with both of us hopping into the game id be surprised if we're ripping down the hill switch, also if you bend the brakes don't you essentially weaken the brake to a point where it could possibly just break off?

For a 4mm rebend (2mm either side), definatly not!! I've heard of 15mm rebends that were fine

i mean you should be ok...if worse comes to worse buy smaller breaks...

if not maybe take them back and swap for the 80mm brakes, bc u can always bend them to fit..

thanks, i just talked to my shop and said they can't bend the brakes due to a liability so i think i'm gonna roll the dice because i can't find these bindings with an 90 brake anywhere.

yeah, any tampering they do with the brake is a liability to them.  You can do it yourself though by securing the ski and just applying even pressure, and I barely had to on my 93 mm skis with a 90 mm. brake.  A wider one is more likely to hook because when you lay a deep carve, your ski is at times nearly vertical and the brake would be closer to the snow.  Try to trade the one for your gf at least.

I guarantee they will not have to bend it AT ALL for your gfs skis and maybe not for yours.

i guess i'll have to look around, i cant seem to find the binding in an 80 or 90 brake width now....i guess that's the chance i took with a late season deal. with a lifter or not, won't your brake be touching snow on a deep carve regardless? i might just pick up the replacement brakes now.

some pull in towards the heelpiece a little when you click in, theres enough clearance that the snow doesn't touch. thats the case for my fischer x17s at least, i think marker does too and probably many other bindings.

yea i was kinda referring to brakes that are the right width for your skis, like 80mm, my bad

gotcha, well thanks for the help, now if a waist is said to be 84 mm, if i'm mounting 2.5/5 cm back from center...won't that make the waist size a little larger?

yes it will...my brother has got some rossignol scratch ghettos and eh had to get new brakes and the only ones the shop had where pow brakes...aka 120mm..those are 84 in the waist...there is a bit of overhang, but he has not run into any probs...its not going to be a big deal man.

thanks man, we're obviously no pros and just wanted to make sure we putting ourselves at any sort of risk by having these things a little wider.....i know most here ski at a pretty high level but we're noobs to say the least.

^ you'll be fine dude. as stated above, as long as your brakes don't catch any snow when you're leaning into your turns i'm sure you won't have any problems. next time though, for an 84 or 81mm underfoot ski.. just get 80mm brakes as they are super easy to bend, and any shop should take care of that for you... no biggy.

good to know there's boarders makin the switch back to skiing... so have fun out there man!
