Colleges requiring 2-year service in a government field

NS-

I am doing a thesis presentation (arguing something) on the idea that HIgh school grads should be required to serve 2-years in a government field (Peace Corps, Military, etc) in order to go to college.

This is a tentative point, because I might say that, if one serves in one of these organizations, he will recieve a sort of scholarship/ financial aid for college.

Tell me your thoughts on this. I picked a mild topic because I don't really care too much and thought it would be interesting.

Also I heard Obama was doing something like this, and I also know Germany does this too.

So college is free for everyone, but we all have to give up years 18-20 to the government? You really think that would work...

I think mandatory service is somewhat of a good idea, although it would take out a portion of the work force for a while. Service is a great thing to have as experience, however. I'll come up with more stuff later pete but I'm mad tired.

This idea that everyone in america needs and is entitled to go to college is ridiculous. 50% of people that start college never finish. Why should the american tax payer fund universal higher education with stats like that???

Think about this.. People PAY MONEY to go to college and drop out rate is around 50%.. what will the drop out rate be when you are getting it for free? i would only guess that the rate will be higher.

Maybe 1 year, but not mandatory for college, maybe after college?  Before would be good too, either way I guess.
But 1 year of service (military or civilian) would do a lot of people a lot of good.

canada has a military college for pretty much just what your talking about. I think you have to have grades high enough out of high school to apply to the program, and if you get accepted you go to that specific college get your degree then after you owe the military a certain amount of time, 4 years or something. While you are at school during summer break and stuff you do some reserves training. I have a few friends who did that. Once your done school you are given a job working with the military. I haven't heard of anyone who goes to that school and becomes a foot soldier or anything. Its more like if you go to school to become an engineer the canadian military will employ you in a position that uses your degree. Once your time is up you can quit and work elsewhere or continue working for the government. Sounds sweet for someone who can't afford university. I think you get paid while you are in school and you get compensated well once you get your degree for the next few years you work for the military. I honestly dont know if anything I just said was correct. I was talking to my buddies who were in the program and thats what I got out of our conversation.

I am pretty sure every civilized country with a military has a program like this. here in the states we have several programs, one being ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) for the Army for sure and im sure for every branch of the military as well.

they pay for your whole college plus living expense. after you go to school you have to serve 8 years, four active and 4 reserve. my girlfriend does this and she will be serving as a nurse in the army.

to the thread creator. is this sort of what you are talking about or something more detailed?

why are you arguing this point btw?

if its for funding for school i think your on the wrong approach. if you can't pay for school there are several ways and programs to fund it rather than making you serve for the government. to me that seems sort of... idk.... dictatorship. so pretty much the message you would send a kid is hey, you can't receive a higher education until you serve 2 years for uncle sam.

ITs called THe ROTC. They pay for all your college, as long as you sell away four years of your life after school, and dont party ever at college. They cetch you once and you get deported to fight. Just suck up the costs and enjoy college and pay that shit off once your making bank.

This is true but alot of students drop out because they just dont have the money to keep paying for school, a program like this would prevent those kids from having to quit.

I think Obamas idea was that if you took out college loans once you graduated the goverment would pay your loans for you if you served a certain amount of time. That could be completly wrong though.

Required? No, it's gonna be very hard to force people to do it.

A scholarship wouldn't be a bad idea. Similar to the GI Bill I guess, but without the requirement of more than 2 years of military life (and not required to be military).

The programs that have been mentioned (ROTC, military academies) do this in reverse. They pay for your college, THEN require service. And usually more than just two years (AFA requires 5 years of active duty and another couple of reserves).

I think thats a terrible idea, I would be really pissed if they implemented it, and college should be free anyway.  Infact we should get paid to go to college.

nothing is free my friend, if everyone 18 years old in the us had free collage for four years think of how giant your taxes would be.

What is wrong with you people? Mandatory community service! Really Really? you want to get dragged out of your house to do what the government deems necessary? If you want to help people go out and do it your self.

You aren't willing to do anything, in else its forced on everybody else too.
