jumping off chair-lifts

I want to jump off a chair lift, but I don't want to de-rail the lift and kill others...do yous have any expirience?

if you do it into powder, you will just sink in and never be able to get out and live off of snow like some sort of smelly snow hobo. So it's better to land on ice and drive your knees up through your shoulders and have the ski patrol take you to the hut where you can get snacks.

i suggest only to do it if there is ALOT of powder and if the drop isnt big. at whister the chairs hardly spring up whe u jump off cuz there so heavy but a dubble seater at a local mt could be sketchy

i had to jump of a chairlift once. it was stopped for 15 mins and i got sick of it. it was 10-15 feet down and hard pack beneith. it wasn't bad, and i'm glad i did because it was a good 15 mins before it got moving again slowly

i was stuffing around with some friends and we derailed a tow once - that was fun. Mountain Ops where bitching to me and where like what the fuck?!?! stupid kids stuffing around - they didn't suspect me cause i was on patrol that day :)

If you go off near a tower, you're in like flynn. I jumped off once, was caught and reprimanded severely. I also knew a kid who jumped off KT22 (the 'new' quad, not the old double) at Squallyworld and his dumb-ass was also busted big-time.

I think it will only de-rail if the chair is swinging like hell when you go or if you upset the counter-balance sufficiently to cause the weight cables to break. I believe the newer lifts are usually better equipped to deal with that than the old Riblet's were. Just one person going off is unlikely to cause a major strain, it's more like if a whole group of people go.

I don't recommend it because it's probably pointless, but I've done it and nobody died. I'll also say that anybody spraying shit about being a new-schooler and not being respected, who goes out and jumps a chair can put two and two together.

Jumping off a lift is a good way to get your arse kicked, if nothing else. Just make sure there are some trees to hide in, cos imho, ski patrol dont like it when you do it.

yea i have jumped off a chair...it was stopped, and the snow was very deep and soft, and it was only like a 6 ft. drop...not to bad....or u could jump of the chair and land in the half-pipe....

i used to do it all the time when i was like 15 years old! it's fun!! but now that i know a lot of people that work at the mountain it sounds pretty dangerous...they say it's only designed for downward pressure. any side to side or upward pressure is DANGEROUS but what the hell you only live once, go big. i think it's fun.

dangerous but fun. plan that your going to do it before the lift stops. once it stops then jump, but look around for ski patrol.

Man, ski patrol sucks. We don't have it in Europe. You can jump off any lift you like. Don't worry about the touching skis thing, you can drop alot further than that. Also if its real high swing down and grab the footrests and then jump. You can always tell if its makeable, just be careful and don't outdo your limits.
Obviously powder is the best and you can do 20ft no worries into nice pow.

Yeah pretty dumb a girl died three years ag when she tried to jump off the lift, her hair got stuck in the chair lift some how and she hung herself to death, the chair kept going by the way until she reached the top.

jumping off a chair can and will derail the chair if done at the wrong spot.

pretty stupid to risk losing your season pass just to jump 10 feet into powder

i knew kids who used to do it here and they always got kicked off the mountain and the school ski program so when the whole school got to go skiing they would have to sit it detention.

I was skiing with my grandfather a few years ago at dodge and when we were getting off of the lift i hooked his ski and he got stuck on the chair. instead of waiting for it to come back arround he jumped from about 10 feet in the air and landed on his skis. Not bad for a 78 year old.

Yeah regardless of what all you dumbfuck 15 yearolds say it can derail the chair i have seen it happen, it has to be in just the right spot and the chances are low but you can defiantley do it. And another thing like mammothpunks said you guys are idiots if you would risk your season pass to drop 10 feet to snow.

any of you ever been to cannon in NH the lift gets really close to the ground most of the time and but its real icy below so it was stopped so me and my cousin decided to jump off but its still like a 8 foot drop. my cousin ended up breaking his arm it was funny

dropping lifts is alirght but throwing friends off lifts is amazing, right when the lift gets going and theres that marked off area its like 4 feet of powder and if u fall in it u just sink and your friend wont get out, but in afterbang two boarders did it in a segment, it was pretty sweet because they were pretty high in the air,

Me and my cousin were stuck on the Tempest chair at sunday river a year ago for abut 45 minutes to an hour. Some lady was throwing chocolate bars at us cause she felt bad. And then we tried to ask some dude what was wrong and then about after 15 minutes we learned he couldn't speak english.. we were thinking about jumping but there was a ski patrol guy two chairs up ahead and it was really high with packed, hard snow at the bottem. It was horrible. If only we were out west with powderrr.

just make sure there's no ski patroll in sight, they'll ban you.

one year at Crystal, the snow was so high under one of the lifts your skis touched the snow when you were riding the chair.

I just don't do it because I knew these two girls, and one of them wanted to jump and the other didn't, so while the one was jumping off, it made the chair bounce and the other girl fell and she was hanged by her helmet strap on one of the bars. Poor chick died dude. My advice: If you jump, do it when you're in the chair by yourself, not with others.
