if your writing a paper maybe just focus on one part of africa,
for me africa is heaps of stuff, i lived in sierra leonne with a aid group rehabing former kid soldiers and travelled most of africa, but ill give you a list of what comes to mind.
Epic surf, and i mean epic, j-bay, durban, liberia, morocco so many good breaks everywhere.
smiling kids, the people there are so stoked when good stuff happens probally because so much bad happened to them.
arab africa riminds me of the kick ass markets they have there you can get anything at all.
slums everywhere we went there are the rich and the incredibly poor, the poor seem more happy then the rich, but i didnt talk to many of the rich people
Jesus fucking christ kid. He didn't ask me what is Africa like? And i didn't say that Africa is nothing but a bunch of people dancing around camp fires, etc. I obviously know that there are more things to Africa than I
mentioned above. For Christ's sake, I've got a fucking master's
degree.
The question was what comes to mind when you think of Africa. Look at all of the posts in this thread. 99% of them say something about an underdeveloped continent that is rampant with disease, hunger, violence, etc. Why do you think that is? Ok, I'll tell you. People have this common misconception of Africa because of what is portrayed in the media. How many times do you see commercials on tv showing the refugee villages? How many times do you read in the newspaper (if you even bother to take the time) about war, death, poverty, disease, pirate attacks off of the coast, etc? When was the last time you saw a commercial on tv promoting South Africa as a wonderful travel destination for you and your family? We are primarily exposed to the dark and disadvantaged side of Africa. So naturally we all think of these types of things when we think of Africa.
But thanks for bringing me up to speed. Clearly I'm just ignant. I'll make sure I write my alma mater and tell them that I had to learn about the socio-economic diversity of developing African nations from some dude named BongBreath on the internet. You fucking win.
hate to break it to you, but South Africa wouldnt really count. i am South African myself, and i assure you that REAL African people didnt build up Cape Town or Joberg or Durban. no way. the white. yes white population of South Africa did so. sure there was apartheid, but it wasnt our fault. that was the government. who do you think voted out apartheid? WHITE voters. if you understood anything about the politics of SA at the moment you'd know that since Tahbo Mbeki the white citizen has literally been made second class. i cite 2/3s laws and the recent barring of white journalists from ANC conferences. think racism. literal racism. black people completely destroying all that the white people put into Joberg and Pretoria. its fucking ridiculous. this isnt racism. i have many black African friends who agree with me. the government is fucking backwards. trying to put fucking the rapist Jacob Zuma in office. a man, whom i wll quote, that raped a woman who was an advocate for AIDS research who was KNOWN to have AIDS. he then said in remark to the event, "Its okay, I took a shower afterwards so the AIDS could not get me." dont believe me? look it up. heres a commercial too. it gained massive popularity because of the event.
Africa is Africa. you cant change Africans. it is wild, and that is how it will always be. governments will always be toppled by new governments. people will always be killed. it has happened countless times in the last century. and if you know anything you will know what im talking about. you see Rwanda and Zim in the news of course. but noooo definitely nothing about SA going down the drain. no way. the wonderful secret 3rd world country that is South Africa. im tired and drunk so my statement may sound ridiculous and ive probably fucked up. when im sober i may type again.
excluding south africa since its modern and all...africa is a poor ass place so under devoloped so much disease aids curruption, so much of the money we send there goes to drug lords, war lords, its impossible to help africa i dont get why we try to hard were not talkign about a country a fucken big ass continent we should help our selves first
well actually it would be ignorant to think africa is at all developed when it is a huge continent with 53 countries in which only a handful are developed and 18% of the people who live there have HIV (close to 50% in some countries). As well you might not noticed with the war in Iraq but almost all of the worlds current armed conflicts are taking place there as well.
