Skis on a plane

hey guys, i might be going to alta next week, i live in Michigan and I was wondering if it is cheaper to rent skis or fly them over. i used search bar and diddnt find anything so any help is appreciated

id deffinantly be better to just bring your own. its just like bringing another bag on the plane which only costs about 20 bucks more compared to like 200 to rent skis for like 5 days

most airlines allow you to bring 2 bags per person, and if you have more it only cost a few extra dollars for a third bag. Definitely bring your skis and you will save loads of money. With the right ski bag, you can also fit boots, ski pants, etc in the bag.

depends on the airline, but regardless i would still bring my own. you can look up the fees on their website.

i went to colorado last year, and my whole family brought skis...

we checked the bags outside (seattle / seatac, don't know about your airport) and it was $2 per bag

= epic win

Definitely check the airline's website regarding luggage before you go. Some airlines will rape you... like bend you over and no lube rape. Like $100+ each way for the "over sized luggage" and handling and checking fees etc. For the problematic airlines, it is usually a better option to curb check your bags and tip the handler. Some airlines are awesome though and will count a boot bag as part of the ski bag. Really depends on the people working though... good luck.

try to check them outside after you get your bording pass.  its usually cheaper coming into the airport then when your actually speaking to the teller where you receive your ticket. could be up to a $100 dollar difference but well worth it having your own skis

hahaha this is the exact thing i said when i read the title of the thread...

I just flew delta and it's 15 bucks for your first bag, 25 for your second. They didn't charge extra for the skis. It changes between airlines though, just check out their website and you'll get your answer.

my understanding is that this is now standard procedure for all airlines.  i flew to whistler and it was exactly the same prices, but on United.  15 for 1st bag, 25 for each additional

i was gonna try to do it with 2 bags by cramming all my ski stuff (boots, pants,helmet) in my ski bag.

But i am very concered about having all my shit "misplaced" by airport employees, has anyone had issues with this?
