Creating a Website

The freestyle team at my resort (Sierra Summit) wants me to create a website for the team.  I've never made a website before, so how would I be able to get the address like: www.sierrasummitfreestyleteam.com?  I don't really want to to use a host in the address or whatever.  So I don't want it to be like www.sierrasummitfreestyleteam.googlepages.com.  Hopefully that made sense.  I need to know of a program where I can make a website.  The website will need the bar up top kind of like NS.  Have the home button, news, about (drop down with FAQ, the park, terrain, etc.), media (drop down with vids and pics), Who (drop down with athlete bios, coach bios, and who's in charge), Store. 

Okay, sorry for that, kind of messy.  If you need a better description, just PM me.  On the website, we will be adding a LOT of videos and Pictures and constantly updating it.  It will need to be very user friendly and easy to maintain.  It would be very nice if we did not have to pay for the service.  We are also going to link in a MySpace and Facebook.  We would also like a blog too.  We want the website to be very proffesional looking.

We are also looking for sponsors, so if you have a company and would be willing to sponsor it, that would be awesome.  We are looking for team beanies, shirts, etc.  Or even if NS wanted to help me out that would be amazing.  We have about 10 team members so far.  The team started about three years ago and is growing each year.  Each team member will wear the logo somewhere and it will be posted on the website.  So Doug, if you want to help me out and sponsor the team that would be awesome.  If not, then that's cool, maybe you can give me some website tips?

dreamweaver is a decent program i think. I used it to design my schools website a few years ago except that was a really simple design. Im not sure on how to aquire a URL though

hmmm, thanks man.  I get a discount as a student I just don't think I can spend 200 on it.

dude you are gonna struggle making this if you dont even know how to get the url you, go to google or yahoo or godaddy or whatever and you can buy urls

so buy a domain name which is the url you want..
then find a server to host it (buy hosting or if you know someone that owns a server)
then make the html pages in notepad or dreamweaver (depending on how ghetto you want the page to be)
then upload the html pages to the server using an ftp client such as FTP Titan or something. Make the homepage like index.html and link all the other pages and shit.

hopes this gave you a rough outline to shape your thoughts son

ummmm it's not exactly that you can just buy dreamweaver and everything will magically happen. it sounds as if you want a pretty complex site. this stuff takes time and can be pretty aggravating (especially if you get into making templates)
basically if you've never made a website before and you want it to look professional then you're going to have to hire it out. either that or take a lot of time to learn before making the final site. i would recommend learning html before using dreamweaver if you're doing it yourself just so that you know what you're doing rather than just pressing buttons

OK,

I think you may have got a little ahead of yourself here. It takes a lot of work to get a decent website up and running. Especially one with lots of video/photo content as you say. Your best bet is to use a template cms service. Such as; joomla, wordpress, mambo, etc. Find a decent template, and try to build it around that.

This will take you a lot of time as you're new to it.

If you need help registering the domain, getting hosting, and any server side stuff I'll be more than able to help you out. I've got my own hosting, and made a couple of sites so I know what I'm doing.

If you can wait till the easter break (well mine anyway) which is April, I could help you out with the site a lot.

eh, why did you volunteer to make a website when you don't even know where to start? Its not like putting together blocks in photoshop or something.

It'll take you alot of time and you won't get that much thanks for it at the end of the day. most people don't realise what goes into making a legit site.

but you want something that can handle video and photos. look at wordpress, it can do everything you want, including shopping cart scripts.

you then only have to learn css and limited html and a tiny bit of php to get it looking ok, or you can run with one of the hundreds of premade templates.

if you go with wordpress you'll want to use wp ecommerce from instinct entertainment

for a free host I can reccomend 50gigs.net - you can buy a .com domain or choose to use their free .co.cc domain

Yeah, setting up something like you describe is a pretty serious project.

An alternative would be to use a service such as ning. Ning will provide you with all the tools you are probably looking for (news section, basic social networking, ability to upload video/pics, etc...) and you could create this network with little programming knowledge and effort.


If you purchased nings premium service you could point it to your url, so instead of www.sierrasummitfreestyleteam.ning.com it would be www.sierrasummitfreestyleteam.com.
