Roommate experiences? heading out to Utah..

Soooo I'm headed out to the U next year for school, and I had never actually worried about a roommate until recently. Numerous friends have told me about their awful roommates, and I don't want to get stuck with a bad one. But since i'm going to Utah, I'm hoping I'll find a skier or someone who shares similiar interests.

Anyways, another option I have besides getting matched up with someone random, is that I could room with one of my buddies (who boards) who is also going to the U. Again, I've heard of people getting sick of their friend as a roommate, therefor I'm unsure about going down that path as well.

Anyone have any advice on making a decision? Also, does utah have a roommate match making system/survey type deal like other schools?

Any further information on dormlife would also be appreciated with karmaaa

tim, go in blind. Totally worth it but try to make connections with as many people as possible.You don't have to be someones roomate to be friends with them. Besides, you can work be friends with the friends your roomate makes if hes not a weirdo.

i havent gone to college but i have had roomates and gone to ski camp and such but just make sure they know not to fuck around with you or there gonna get fucked up and then after that just be super chill with them and unless there wack they will prolly be super chill with you.

well I'm honestly not worried about making friends... I find that fairly easy. I'm just wondering whether or not I should get a random or a friend... I just wanna know how often people have found that their roommate is unbearable and whatnot.

And t-rob, at this point ill probably go in blindly like you said, I'm just scoping my options.

For reference, I'm a freshmen at CU-Boulder.  I thought about rooming with a buddy of mine from high school, but we decided not to because we didn't want to end up hating each other after the year was over.  Instead, I drew randomly and did alright.  My roommate and I aren't really friends and don't hang out ever, but we're both respectful of each others space, don't touch each others stuff, etc.  Most people I know that went in randomly ended up hating, or generally disliking their roommate though, so its really up to you.  Its tough living with someone that has no similar interests to you, and theres a ton of weird people you could potentially draw.

If I could take back anything from this year, it would be rooming with someone random.  I think my buddy and I would have gotten along well, at least better than my current roommate and I.

i got fucked both ways.  first semester i go in with a good friend from high school, ended up being a total dick.  his gf would show up for a weekend and he would kick me out of the room with like a 30 second prelude to it...  fucking bastard.  yes i know, gf personal time is important, but hear me out.  this kid drives a 2004 audi that used to be his moms cause she decided she wanted an 08 (brand new back in 2007) BMW.  he could afford a hotel room for two night no prob.

next roommate, totally random dude that moves in, i end up with pneumonia for about a week and a half but i was bed ridden.  he decides to rack this random chick in the room while im hacking and crap.  but i managed to get him back when i had sex with a girl that was later in the Maxim hometown hotties search thang.

altogether, its really hit and miss.  most of the time, people that live together end up hating each other after being thrown into a room in a college situation like that.

this year was my first year, and i am rooming with one of my best friends, who ive known since i was 6 years old. we have a lot of things that annoy each other for sure, but we definitely dont hate eachother. i really like it actually, i dont think id want my freshman year to be any other way. next year, im rooming with my other best friend, who ive also known since like kindergarten. not sure how thats going to turn out but i guess well see. from personal experience, id say room with someone you know because mine has turned out well. weve both made loads of new friends, and im actually better friends with some of the people he had originally introduced me to.

I've never stayed in a dorm, but I live with roommates now.  Make sure you have some sort of boundries laid out, like, what your okay with and what your not.  And if you have some type of problem with them, make sure you get it off your chest or you explode when someone comes home all drunk and in fight mode

if your going to the U then you have access to a roomate finder... i cant remember the url but just search around the website a bit and i bet you find it... it allows you to search for kids that have similar interesests as you... and you can fill out a form as well so other people can search for you.    this works quite well.

^^^ thats pretty sick, I wish my school had something like that. Ive had random roomates up until this year (senior year), and only had a problem with my roomate freshman year, that gotti fuck. But sophmore year my randomly assigned roomate actually ended up having the same birthday as me, and we were born in the same hospital. Its crazy, I wonder if we were lying next to each other in that room they put newborns in? lol
So getting a random roomate is hit or miss, but can be a good way to branch out and meet new people. Right now I'm dorming with a friend of mine. Things have been going pretty well but I have heard about a lot of friendships that get ruined because of dorming together

My roomate is a complete fuckface

But I'd still choose random, if you don't like the person then just don't deal with them, that's what I do.  Or request a change later, but at least give it a shot, college is a good place to meet people, might as well open a new chapter in your life so to speak.

worrdddd, I think thats what im gonna do. I figured I should probably experience college to the fullest, so even if I get a bad roommate, I guess its all part of the grand scheme of things.

i  went into it blind.  Got a decent roomate, just smoked tons of bud so he was never in an agressive mood.  Worst thing was when he was shitfaced and pissed on my bed with me sleeping in it.  haha.  But id go random, i know tons of people who go with friends and hate them afer the time.  Might as well have a random hate you then an old friend.

when i went to college, i was randomly assigned a roomate.

he turned out to be a pretty cool guy. we were more buddies than friends, but as far as roomates, we got along well.

plus he had cool shit and his parents always bought us junk food.

it wasn't a bad way to go, but i had many friends who had shit ass loser roomates too.
