Bike help

hey guys, last year, i ended up breaking my headset on my bike. the bottom set of bearings are loose, and their casing cracked in places. the bottom cover also got torn up, so theres noting covering the bearings from the bottom. the problem is, i dont know if i need an internal headset, an integrated one, or a standard one.

its a 05 gt chucker 1.0, and i believe its an internal headset.

ok, so hopefully, those work. so, if it is an internal headset, would this headset be compatible?

Yes its internal, you need to know threaded or threadless.  find that out buy a new one and then take it to a bike shop and ask to use a headset press or pay the 10 bucks, really easy tho

if you're taking it in to a shop get them to face the headtube. if the headset is cracked then part of the reason could be to unevenness in the headtube. then get them to press it in. alternative is to jack up some kind of press device that winds both cups into the tube evenly.

I made my own tool using a coachbolt with a series of washers that kept the bolt centred in the cups and then a large square washer on the outside of each cup. then I got a spanner and tightened the nut until it was seated properly. easy as and about $4 to get parts for it

I can't believe you knew it's a internal headset without knowing it's threadless.

Very few modern day mountain bike frames require threaded headsets.

You have an internal threadless headset. Go to you local bike shop and have them look at it first, if it's still in working shape they can crank down your top cap bolt a little more and hopefully get it to stop rocking. If it's totally shot though they'll help you find a compatible one and it shouldn't cost you too much at all.

hey guys, uhm, the thing is, the headset itself isnt actually broken. its just the the plastic spacres between ball bearings, some of them have been destroyed. they got fucked because i tightened my headset too much... so the question here is, should i buy the headset online, and then take it to my lbs and have them install it?

Oh and check this too because I think that headtube is oversized, making it 1.5 diameter and not 1 1/8.

go to your bikeshop and get a new spacer. they should be able to hook it up.

Don't do anything rash like spending pointless money before having you lbs check it out. Take it to the shop and ask what you gotta do. If you need a new headset see what they have in stock or get the one you found online and take it from there.
