Organ Donor

A case of a snowboarder being taken off life support came up today over getting his organs harvested.  Im wondering what everyone here feels about organ donation.  Do you feel that a doctor will actually hasten your death if you put yourself as an organ donor?  Also, state why you think they will or wont.

thats such a touchy subject. i mean don't get me wrong if i was no longer capable of living and someone else could survive from my parts i'd be all for that but i chose not to be an organ donor because i wouldn't want to die prematurely if i had a chance to live. i don't give blood which i know isn't reall friendly but it's cause i don't wanna be harassed by the blood banks and also cause i'm deathly afraid of needles.

i hate thread hijackers..... they are ruining NS.

I see no issue with donating organs, i'm pretty sure it says i'm an organ donor on my divers licesne. I also donate blood whenever I can. If i get crushed by an 18-wheeler in an accident and have to live on life support like a vegitable, i would rather my healthy organs go to someone who could actually use them, rather than have them go to waste inside myself.

when i worked for the funeral home on occasion an organ donor would come in...its pretty gross what they look like when they are done.

good stuff so far good opinions.  What do you guys think about doctors letting you die in order to harvest your organs cuz your a donor?  Think its true??  I don't, cuz in my mind if they would do that if your a donor then they could do the same the opposite way.  say your not a donor and need an organ, maybe they dont wanna give one to you...

maybe its like if you have a 50 % chance of survivng and some other guy who needs your organs has a 90 % chance of survivng if they get an organ transplant than they would do it.

Watching House and the thought of Organ Donors came to me.  I am an organ donor and I'm proud of it.  On top of that, I don't see why almost everyone isn't an organ donor (barring religious beliefs).

In the case you describe, I can't imagine that doctors would just prematurely end your life.  Especially because it is the families decision to pull the plug, a doctor won't euthanize you.  In addition to this, what does the doctor have to gain?  I mean, they don't know how much your life is worth.  Also, they don't know how much the persons lie is worth on the top of the donor list.  Why take a life to give a life, when there might be an opportunity to save both lives down the road?


So I pose the question, should everyone automatically be an organ donor, and it is something that you opt out of?  This would provide many more organs for those in need and would alleviate many of the problems that the donor list  currently sees.

Call it selfish or I dunno what, but once you are dead why does it matter?  Ok, sure some of your body is harvested, but for the most part you look fine.

How about this, leave the eyes, skin and tissue (exterior parts) in place, and those are opt in.  For the rest of the internal organs, it is opt out, providing no preexisting health conditions.

Think of how many lives could be saved, and how can your body that you no longer use be put to a better purpose than to save the life of someone that can use it?

In regards to the body, I am pretty sure I have heard somehwere that if organs are harvested after death they remove them in a very clean matter....not just hack you up.  So if you have an open casket funeral nobody can even tell.

when you donate only something like 4% of people that die can donate there organs. you need to be brain dead but you blood still running or something like that. you will have a 0 chance of coming back to live when they take the stuff out.

Just go all you guys know if you put organ donor on your license or tell you family that in the sudden case of you death I would like my organs donated that doesn't mean shit and legally they Will Not harvest your organs. You must have a legal document that it signed by you ahead of time.

if you die and have organ donor on your license, they can harvest your organs but i think your family has the right to stop it.
so if your a nobody, with no family, but you have organ donor on your license, then they can harvest your organs.

nope that is not true, at least in my state.  they go through your family first, if your an organ donor and they ask your family and they say no, they cant take your organs.  i dont know about the "nobody" case but they are usually pretty careful about it i'd assume.  people would get really pissed off if they didnt want their relatives organs taken and they werent asked first i'd bet.

Why not just take the land that no one's using? Why not steal some dead guy's car?

And you still haven't answered the biggest question:

Why do you DESERVE my organs? If some douchebag needs a liver transplant because he drank too much, or someone smoked too much and needs my lungs, or someone punctured a kidney because she was texting LOL LIKE OMG while driving, I don't think it should go to them.

There's no small dotted line that says my organs will go to someone who actually needs them (25 and under, diseased).

And I don't want to give doctors incentive to deny me care. I'd rather see 3 Tiny Tims die than support the drinking habits of 10 chads.

its not either going to a sick kid or a old drunk...
people have random heart problems, kidney problems, liver problems all the time.

My english teacher got throat cancer a couple years ago (it was cured though). he never smoked or anything, he was an older man (50-60?) in good shape.

shit happens to people, why not help them out?

and why not be a good person and donate them anyway? so it goes to someone who was a drunk and now they can beat your liver to shit, your still a good person, and you don't need it. you still did a good deed. its like donating money to a bum. he might go out and buy booze, but you still did something good.

and what if you got sick and needed a liver? what if everyone had that same mentality that their organs will end up going to some low life? you would be pretty pissed

i also believe that drunks and smokers and people who inflict damage on their own body get knocked down on the donor list. i remember watching some doctor show (i mean its tv, but i doubt that they idea is fake...) and some guy who needed a liver drank some champaign at his daughters wedding and they wouldnt give him a liver.

you seem to assume the only people who need organ transplants are ones who are massive douchebags. i highly doubt there is any real backing to that claim, so ill just ignore it.

when you die, you lost all your rights. therefore, you really have no fucking reason to not give away your organs, and you will lose nothing and you could save someone (who isnt a douchebag's) life.
you're just being a fucking prick for no reason if you dont donate your organs.

I'm not donating my heart to some fat fuck who couldn't keep his shit in check. I'm not donating my tendons so some obese fuck can walk again cuz he wore out his own. I'm not giving my liver away or kidney away to someone who abuses themselves or doesn't take care of themeselves.

That's what it comes down to, but 90% of these people are just that, so fuck 'em. If Timmy wants my damn kidney, he can have it, but I'll be damned if the doctors steal my shit and give it to someone who doesn't deserve it.

Here's a better question:

If it's perfectly ok to donate an organ, whether posthumously or not, then WHY is it illegal to sell it?

If it's mine, and only I can give permission for someone else to have it, then why can't I try to sell it? It's mine.

It brings up the question George Carlin proposed about prostitution: Why is it illegal to sell something thats perfectly legal to give away?


I have mixed feelings about organ donations, but because I'm a cynical fuck sometimes. I am a donor, and I haven't heard a good reason for ANYONE to not be an organ donor, but at the same time if everyone was then not as many people would die, and there are too many people in the world as it is...

i imagine its illegal to sell organs because then youll have people going around killing people and harvesting their organs for money...
also you'd have to have a legit knowledge of where the organ came from and that persons medical history etc. etc.


as for prostitution, it shouldnt be illegal.

organ donation is different than prostitution in that youre not giving away your organs, youre dead, and no longer own them, therefore they can be taken from you.
