Your first "i-am-a-skier"-moment?

basically, title says it all. what was the first second that you thought by yourself "hey man, youre kinda good/good enough to call yourself a real skier"?

for me it was 2/3 years ago when i first landed a 5. a 5 always had been this trick for me, idk, just the first of the "serious" freeski tricks.

and two days ago, i rode out a cork 7 cleanly (in the words of 2009: i afterbanged the shit out of it), which again gave me a feeling of just having entered another exclusive club...

nice, i would say that 5s are a good benchmark, but hey, i know some kids who aren't very good at actual skiing, yet they're like 5'2" and can spin like tops, but can't do much else very well.  iono, something to think about.

I have not had this moment yet but I'm working towards it this year.  I think it will be when I am able to do almost any feature at my  mountain or the day when I can cleanly 3 a large table.  I havnt had the moment but can't wait for it, cause thats why we ski.  For those moments.  Nice thread.

I don't think that it has to be an accomplishment in the park.  I can only do 3's and rails, but I still consider myself a skier.  I mostly ski the mountain and huck cliffs and stuff like that, I've only very recently started skiing park, but I consider myself to be a skier.

yeah exactly man even before my NS days when i was just carving and stuff I was still having fun and was stoked to ski, starting freeskiing has just brought a new way to challenge myself and make the sport even more fun

rite, i wasnt talking about park achievements exclusively. everything that makes you feel "special", that gives you this moment, in which you just love to ski and totally dig the stuff you just made

For me I look back and notice how nights before I'm going skiing I find myself lying in bed thinking so hard about what I want to do the next day and how fired up I get that I'll be on the slopes having fun and working to progress. It's hard to fall asleep those nights.

My mom tells stories about how it snowed every day for the entire March leading up to my birth and how she skied a great deal of pow with me in the womb.

That's probably how it started.

umm well ive felt like a skier for like my whole life cause ive been skiing since i was 2, but for park skiing specifically i really felt like i was like a true park skier was this season when it started, i was landing tricks that i had previously thought were really hard, had 2xl everything, afterbanged, and my first day on jumps did cork 9 3rd hit...thats when i really felt that i was a true park skier

My first real skier moment was when i almost landed a misty 900 on this small shitjump, and this hot chick comes over to me and says; hey you are really good at skiing!

Probably when I was out west with my dad and I hit a run that he wouldn't even touch.
That was pretty big. Especially because the guy I was skiing with told me that the only way I'd be able to stop if I fell would be by getting on my side and jamming my pole in with two hands and praying.
I think my dad bought me a beer after that one.

And all my life because the only time I ever really feel like myself is when I'm at the hill. With goggles on my face and skis on my feet.

this kinda goes for me too.

first "I am a skier moment " though was my first time downhill skiing, on an 8th grade school trip, I just put my rental skis and boots on, went out on the bunny hill, skied down fine when most of the other kids were falling over, got my pass marked so I could go up the chairlift, and didn't go inside for the rest of the day, even though I was freezing in my jeans and sweater.

Also I learned 5s about 3 weeks ago, which I was pretty stoked on.

When I was doing my CSIA level one, the instructor got us to do a free run down this rock hard bump run full of ice chunks, and I just charged it without stopping, then had to wait a few minutes at the bottom for everyone, including the instructor to catch up.

Also hiking for 45 minutes over rocks and ice with ~60 km/h wind gusts blowing in my face to get to a pow stash which turned out to be mostly wind-buff, then ripping it anyway.

Being a real skier has nothing to due with ability. For me, I would call myself a skier because it is my medicine, my escape from real "normal" society. It is my passion in life.

mine was either when i got my first "tail grab" at about seven or when i was around 11 and got my first 5 on race skis haha on an like 10ft jump

when i learned how to slay pow really, it was a line i did in whistler after a long skin, 10 ft cornice in then i laid in some gs turns and hit like a 15 foot exit cliff and i considered myself a real skier after doing that

i would say the end of this year marks me as being a real skier.  this year was my first and i accomplished so much and learned so fast in the 6 or 7 times i went to the mountain

ive learned
mutes, safteys, criticals, 180, spread eagle, and zero spin

plus i learned to do jibs sideways and not straight forward

and i finished the season with a zero spin in the big park, even though i didnt get a ton of air, it was still a good feeling to get some air and sack it up

I started skiing at 2. When I was in sixth grade iwanted to go to the local mountain to try snowboarding. My dad took me to demo a board and the mountain was all out of my size rentals. I wanted to be in the park so the guy set me up with these new skis I hadnt heard of before.......twin tips. Best thing that ever happened to me.

thats correct, but if you look at the other posts, its not about ability. like noone is talking about sw 9s or doubles, although i am sure that a few of the people that answered can do em... its more about that second, when you realize that this is your passion. and i hardly believe that this feeling comes without some kind of impulse...

I remember that I learned to ski in France when I was a few years old and then from there I guess as a family we would ski a week every year..
Growing up through my teenage years, all my friends snowboarded, no exceptions - I was one of 8 but it didn't bother me..
Anyway when I was 15 I was convinced by everyone to snowboard, so I took that up for a few years. At this time, the only real skiing I would do is with friends at our Australian resorts, which is shit snow, but good times. At that point, I was a snowboarder and I didn't think that would change!

When I finished high school back in 2001, my parents took my family away for a holiday in Europe and we went back to the French Alps for a few weeks - I got a snowboard, everyone else got skis..
I snowboarded for the first week, but I wanted to be able to ski with my dad and the snow was really great so I decided to get back on skis again for the second week.

As soon as I started skiing again, I knew I wasn't turning back - fundamentally I was 10x as good on skis as on a snowboard and the best thing I did was get back into those hard fucking ski boots
