Have we forgotten about skiing?

I feel like its way too easy these days to get cought up in just about everything ski related except for SKIING. "BLAH BLAH BLAH, Tom Wallisch, Nick Martini, goggles, skis, leather boots, more skis, taller t shirts, Tight pants."

I love this sport to death, I live for it. All I'm saying is that with  more and more money going into the ski business we as a community cant lose track of what we all came here to do, ski.

(Ironically I'm making a thread about skiing which very much falls into the category of skiing related things that arent skiing)

i have but thats because i cant ski for 6-7 months. otherwise, no i will never forget about skiing.

i personally believe that kiids these days care more about looking good, best gear, Whos Who, and everything else...

I mean i live in GA now, and ski 4-5 weeks a year, and when i get to goto Park City, i am the Happiest kiid there, and i dont care if you make fun of me, cause im still goin to be sking, and just because i struggle with 7's, doesnt mean im not having as much fun as you...

and if anyone wants to ski up at PC, ill be there April 4- Close... come check out some ATL steeze

it doesnt really bug me that people like to talk about their gear... and no we definitely have not forgotten about skiing. i mean just because you care about your stuff when you ski doesnt mean youve forgotten about skiing. or something like that.... idk haha

I ski because I enjoy it more than probably most other things, not because of what I can throw (which REALLY isn't much), how good my rep is, or what size tee and jacket I wear.

Unfortunately, that's not the case for many people. When it gets to the point that you are coordinating your bandanas (and saying "What colour are you wearing? I've got black... so don't wear red," which I have heard, makes you sound like a complete and total tool), you are putting more importance on the look than the enjoyment.

its the other way around. Skiing itself is central and the other things (clothes, other material things) feed off the actual skiing.

when it comes to just skiing, there isnt really much to talk about. thats why we talk about inane shit like tall tees and how much butter we can fit on one piece of toast

I know that I have not forgotten about the love of the sport, I ski on average 100 to 110 days a year while going to school full time. It doesn't matter to me whether or not im heading up the mountain to ride with friends or to just trying and meet random ppl. I would be just as happy doing laps on my own listening to tunes. To me its all about the feeling of having snow sliding beneath your feet, plain and simple. I know that I will be crucified for saying this but...If you are on NS more hours per week then you are skiing then you are most likely in it for not the love of the sport. Why not spend 3 days not on NS and just get all of your HW/work done and then get to be able to go skiing the next day. Its all about priorities and if skiing is at the top of your list you will make it happen no matter what (Last night I was up till 4:30 in the morning just so that I will be able to go skiing later today).

I know that this does not fit for everyone such as ppl that are working all day and their mountain doesn't have night skiing. Oh and not having access to a car is not an excuse I have hitch hiked more times they you have made your meat beef jerky.

really? I can only ski on weekends and i have plenty of extra time to get on ns during the week.... i dont think that means im not in it for the love of the sport....

idk why you would even bother with skiing if you "werent in it for the love of the sport"... im pretty sure everyone here loves skiing.

to the thread creator, what you are saying about skiing could be said with any sport. Soccer for example...you talk about what cleats you got, what ones are good, whats your favorite player, how good is he, whats your team, how are they doing, hows the coach, etc.

Don't look at it as because we talk about this shit that we've forgot about skiing, look at it as if because we talk so much about this shit that we have NOT forgotten about truely skiing

-talking about skiing the sport (you think high school baseball players dont play fantasy baseball? this is the same thing)
-help with what gear to get. you may think its not about having the best gear but if your such a skier, i'd like to see you go throw down (park or not) on some old straight skis. people want advice and help, just like what baseball bat should i get so i can improve?
-Yes people like to look good skiing, who gives a shit? look at any sport... they all have the nicest and best gear. im not going to go huck a cliff into powder in a jacket that can't resist water, im not going to hike a ridge in a jacket that breathes like a garbage bag.


The rest of the website is a community. a place for skiers to come together. talk about school, about life, about the ladies, meeting up. making the community bigger only makes skiing bigger.

if you think its turning for the worst, then get the fuck out. But if you watch videos from back in the day (if you do that? i donno, you seem to ski and thats it) then you will see the kind of amazing progress this sport has made. tricks consisted of pole plants and making nice choppy turns, now people are flying 80 feet through the air while spinning off axis multiple times. people are jumping off 50 foot cliffs and skiing away from it. I see inspiration in all this to be a better skier

I do not have a mountain any where close enough to go daily after school or on weekends. I also cannot drive myself. Hitch hiking is not only illegal, but dangerous and my parents would kill me if i tried, which i know better not to. I also play sports every day after school too. its also expensive and in the economy, my family doesnt have the money to go skiing as often.

So what is this website to me? its skiing from home. I stay up to date, i help people out, i learn new things that i can try when i eventually get up to the mountain, i meet new people, i get help. I love skiing so much that when im not doing it, i surround myself with it by going on this site.

So don't tell me i dont ski because i love the sport. if i could, i would ski year round. i am, in fact, basing college choices off location to some extent (is there skiing or not). I love this sport

I sometimes find myself getting caught up in all the talk, but that isn't the intention. It is a withdrawal symptom from too few hours in the mountains...

I haven't skied in three weeks, and I live in BC. This is seriously the worst feeling ever. I will get to go for a week-long trip to 5 mountains this break, but there is no time for me to ski as much as I want. After a long day at school, driving 2 hours to ride 3 isn't really an option. Weekends are my opportunity, but no transportation and piles of homework add up. Plus I need to work. I love skiing with every part of me, but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

NS, on the other hand, is easily accessed no matter how tired I am. It is nice to chill here when I'm in no mood to do anything, and the people here are people who love skiing as much as I do. It is easy to spend hours on here, and few hours actually skiing, unless you live close to a mountain or have a more lenient schedule that allows you to take days off and ski.

Spending less time skiing just means it's even better when you get up there.

Hell, if you really want to argue this, then watch Matchstick Claim

The first part of the movies talks about how BC skiing is what real skiing is. no man made jumps, no grooming, just untouched powder on untouched terrain.

Before i go on, i do agree to an extent, but im not hating on freestyle

You think skiing has become a scene, it has trailed way far off from what it really is all about?

Then why do you ski park if you think skiing has been taken way to far from what it really is? Park is so far from what true skiing is. i mean what  do you think park is? its basically a competition. people get better to be better than someone else, and to look good while doing it. Going off man made jumps too.
I mean, i ski a little bit of park, and a good amount of groomers and what ever BC i can find out here in the east. If i could only ski pow and nothing else, i would absolutly, but i know that will never happen and that park and groomers are much better than nothing. and no matter who you are, park is a competition. even in the BC, if you do a trick off a cliff, well you don't have to, but now you look a hell of a lot better. or you could just straight air it and wear a cool looking jacket. they go hand in hand

but really, if your taking it this far, then go the whole way. stop skiing park and start hiking up random mountains. you wanna practice your 720's? hike up the mountain over there, hit that cliff, and spin. then hike it again. Chair lifts aren't the essence of skiing. they are for lazy people, its just a convinience like so many other things we have talked about.

this is an incredibly stupid argument. skiing hasn't become anything but better. if people wanna dress the way the dress, so be it. if they wanna talk about other skiers? let them. whats wrong with that? if they like taking and dressing and dont love skiing, then screw them, what is it your problem? it doesnt mean real skiers cant though
