Helicam for ski movies

Has anyone here tried any filming with a helicam?? theyre toy helicopters with cameras in them, and i was thinking that it might provide some cool angles for a ski movie without getting a real helicopter. Heres a cool video of a helicam



Imagine a heli hovering in front of a big cliff, an angle that would be almost impossable to get, or hovering above a jump so the skier flys right by it

Yeah, that would work really well. I dunno about 100 ft cliffs, but that would be sick to have in the park. It would provide some cool angles for urban-- you can't get a real helicopter in there. Is there a live monitor feed that you can use to control it?

This would definitely be sweet but until they come up with a real time live feed to a monitor on the ground  i think it would be tough.

i was looking on the site and there is one!

there not cheap though the heli thing with camera mount was like 2300 i think and the screen was like 900

I was reading a recent issue of ummm... powder mag i believe and there is an article about how someone is beginning to experiment with the use of these helicams for skiing,  I guess it's pretty hard to master the controls cuz of the wind currents etc... blowing around such a small object in the sky.. it would be sooo sick to see a new movie come out shot with a helicam tho, imagine how close that shit could get to a skiier cuz there is less blowback created by the rotors on the helicammm

That would be sick but I bet it would take a shitload of practice even with a realtime monitor.

I did some research on it realiscically to mount a good camera it would cost in the relm of 10g for the Heli and The rotating base. Two people controling it. One flying the heli and the other controling the camera. Hopefully we get some good sponsors next year and are able to afford one of these toys.

I was thinking that this summer I would buy a helicopter and find a decent quality RF camera and try to mount it. I'm not gonna go with a rotating cam, too much work to set up and when filming.

Anyone know any good RF cameras? I was looking online and they all are either too big or tiny spy cams that are low res

thats actauly realy innexpensive, not only compared to a real hlicopter. Im saving up for a camera that is worth 4,000 dollars right now and thats only barely good enough quality for ski movies.

there is a guy here in colorado who has one that has a gps unit on it so the chopper will stay on a set path no matter wind or other variables, level 1 had it up at echo last week but it was to windy to fly i guess.

I'm pretty sure in thats it thats all they use one in the half pipe at NZ, the shot was literally in the pipe so it had to have been one.

you dont need a 4000 dollar camera to have good enough quality to make a ski movie...

$600 HV30s (which i have) have been used for independent films. Its the operator, not just the camera. If you have a $1000000 camera, doesn't mean you will shoot good video, and on the other hand i bet a hollywood cinematographer could shoot a decent movie on their cell phone

well you dont need hvxs. you dont even need hd really if your just distributing your film on dvd. just cause you have a fancy camera dosent mean your film will be awesome. i agree with the other guy that responded

oh but i dont mean to be coming down on your filming man that latest edit you did was sweet the shredding on a dream. just I'm saying you dont have to blow the budget for quality all the time

I always wanted to try making a movie on a cell phone. as a challenge, it would be awsome... but I dont have a cell phone so it will have to wait!
