Racing to Freestyle Skiing

Notice how great freestyle skiing is.
I dont know one person who has switched from freestyle to racing.
Yet i know like 50 people who have switched from racing to freestyle skiing.
I have always been a freestyle skier not racing.
Racing is gay.
Same for everyone else to?
Or it different depending on where you live?
Thoughts...?

Jon Olsson is competitively racing at a pretty high level right now.

I don't think racing is gay, it can be pretty fun... I just think the attitude that comes with racing is what rubs a lot of people the wrong way.

for example those really tight spandex they wear for racing. id say that defenatly drives people the wrong way.
what i probably should have put is that
freestyle is just plain cooler period.

yeah, i think someone said it before, but racing isnt gay, racers are the gay ones. i race for school. its fun, i wish i was good at it (like good at legit racing). There are two kids on my ski team for school who are great racers, like ones going to states, and they are both awesome people. Ones a great lacrosse player, the other is just hysterical and hes even our school president and everyone loves him. for ski team at school, they would NEVER wear GS suits, they even said in an interview that they thought they were stupid and would only be pulled out for sectionsals and states.

wow, you are a dick. I know many racers and they are mostly pretty cool. The freestyle team at the mountain I ski at when I'm in school are the local asshats, the racers have all been chill.

cant actually ski worth a shit.

im not saying all racers are like that im sasying that freestyle is cooler. my main point.
plus freestyle skier can actually ski.
for example moguls, big mountain park ect. A freestyle skier is more likley to bcome a better all round skier than a racer

racing is def not gay, it takes alot of discipline and balls. someone said it up there, but its the racers, not the racing thats gay. the best racer in my state was in my 1st period class, and he was the biggest tool ever. the same could easily be said for freestyle skiers riding around the mountain like they own the damn hill. that bothers me more because they are not presenting our sport like the way it is, having fun

meh. I'm pretty sure most racers have a good background in all those areas you mentioned as well. there's nothing that's "cooler" about freestyle skiing. it's just what you like to do.

you can always tell the difference between a jibber and a racer. some kids are cool and kill it, other are coached into killing everyone (and the scene/vibe). this thread made me realize why i dont like alot of skiers. we should def. take a lesson from the snowboarders when it comes to this.

i dont really think any kind of skiing is gay...i started off racing and it was really fun for me at the time..then i moved on to freeskiing because it was just all the more fun...

i recommend doing both at any point in life...but wouldnt say any kind of skiing is gay cuz any kind of skiing is SO fun

i race. i love skiing whether im in the course hauling ass or getting face shots. Some racers are assholes, some park rats are assholes, whatever, deal with it and go shred. Enjoy yourself and stop ragging on other people who love skiing in whatever form it takes.

to the thread poster. you can't just go around saying racers are gay, they look stupid, and no one likes them. many pro skiers started as racers, and skiing developed through racing. i'm sure most racers can ski better than most people on this site as well

Me: I been in freestyle since i left the little kiddie thing at my home mountain. slowly ive watched more and more racers join the freestyle side. freestyle is more chill, more about fun, and you dont have to wait at the top or the bottom of a course.

with that said. I think the kids that go all the way through or even part way through racing are better skiers than kids that just joined the freestyle stuff and never learned how to ski properly. Then some of them that switch are far better at the basic skiing and have better fundamentals for jumping. Also i don teven think this is a legit rule, becaus ei can think of so many exeptions, but what eva.

oh yeh I also have a fiery hate for all racers, expecially the ones that absorb the jumps for race training, and the fags that own 7 pairs of skis. And because of this I dislike anything associated with spyder, and their rediculously high prices.

jon is pushing for the olympics, racing isnt gay, the people who race might be gay, but I wont judge, I would personally love to do downhill when you boost off a huge drop, looks sick, and skiercross is sick, lot of my friends do it, its basically racing, to the threadposter about switching to racing, you have a point, jon olsson is the only one

I never raced, but I have family who raced (my cousin used to be on the jr olympic team)
I have mad respect for racers
racing is much more physically demanding, as well as a lot riskier

this is my first year as doing free ride only, raced for the past 9 years. i have never gotten hurt free skiing, but have gotten hurt many times racing. nothing i've hit(cliffs/jumps) have been as scary as a DH race i did last year where i got clocked at 73 mph

I poached a slalom course a few nights ago and it was definitely the highlight of my day. Even though i have no edges going around the gates and hitting them to the ground was so satisfying, haha it made me want to go out one day with some sharp slalom skiis and just lap through a full course.

Most racers I know are better all around skiers than people who started out riding park and the mountain because they actually know what they're doing.

I love freestyle as well but have to majorly disagree with you.
I would say that racers are alot better at actual skiing, whether it be moguls or big mountain simply because the amount of technique and power that is involved with racing is unbelievable. If you dont think so, look at almost any big mountain skier or even good park skier. The large majority started as racers, simply because racing builds skills that cant be taught in the park. so id say that freestyle skiers are NOT at all more "likley to bcome" a better all round skier but racers easily take that catagory.

Racing isn't gay. It takes as much skill as freestyle if not more if you're actually good and can go amazingly fast. I drove Jon Olsson to calgary from panorama and he is trying to get into the Olympics for 2014 in ski racing, so it shows that you can do both or just the one that you like, but just because you don't like the other one doesn't mean you have to rip on them because you think it's gay.

People can ski however they want, I personally hate a lot of racers I know because they are rich bitches. I have a lot of respect for racers and freesylers, I personally prefer freestyle but people can do what they want.

wow thread creator you talk some shit.  You have changed your "main point" so many times haha.
I race and I freestyle ski.  Without racing I wouldn't be allowed to ski, I love freetyle skiing doing jumps, rails cliffs, the exhileration is amazing.  But the feeling of doing downhill going 125kmph and doing jumps is complelty different.  THe technical basis racing provies creates a much better freestyle skier, to someone who has done freestyle all their life.  It's a complete matter of opinion and you shouldn't think people are "gay" because they're racers and they "wear spandex" & go fast.   Freestyle skiing is seen as the "cool thing to do" but to put all racers into a "gay stereotype" is so narrow minded.  Their are many "faggots" in racing, maybe more than in freestyle but that's because the attitude is different, there are also many "faggots" in freestyle skiing too, you're probably one of them for posting this. Seriously grow up if you're so narrowminded. /rant.

there are so many more racers that can ski the whole mountain well than strictly park skiers that can ski the whole mountain well

tanner did moguls to start out. jon did racing. you dont see any kids going from freestyle to owned a race course.

im not necessarily backing racing as being better, but i do think that a racer/mogul (freestyler) makes a better skier for sure
