It depends on the helmet, but I generally size up. Although if the helmet comes loaded with velcro padding, just buy your regular size and take the padding out. Best yet, bring a hat to try on the helmet with.
Whenever I try on ski gear I try to wear it as if I were on the mountain...ski socks for ski boots, base layers under outerwear etc...
