Got my taxes back...

and I want to make a purchase to for my photo outfit. I was looking at the SB-600 or the nikkor 10.5mm fisheye

I have the stock 18-55mm 55-200mm and 50mm with a D40 and D90. I dont know if I want to spend 600 for the fisheye but I need a better lens than my 18-55. will the flash improve my photography that much?

depends how much you use it. I would say go the the sb-900.

However if you dont use a flash a lot, go for a better lens, I would say wait for the fish.

Depends. I use my SB 800 a lot. A LOT. haha but I do a lot of portraits. Then again I use my 10.5 f/ 2.8 a lot as well, and it is such a nice lens. Super fast and plain awesome. But honestly I think i would go with the lens they don't depreciate in value as fast if any really and you'll get more use out of it.

I'd save up for the 70-200mm 2.8 that's my favorite lens evvvvaaaaar. You could cut people with how sharp that lens is. And I use that all the time. But its a little more than the fisheye.

thanks for the input. yeah flash does sound nice for portrait or getting creative with lighting but i'm just not sure how much I would use it. in low light I've been using headlamps to light things. the 70-200 sounds amazing but I'm a sucker for wide angle. I love my 50mm but I just dont see myself using a 70-200 lens so much

word, when used properly a decent flash set-up will improve your photos much faster. Check out the lighting 101 tutorial on http://www.strobist.blogspot.com then decide what you'd rather have.

and the 2nd photog is dopers

To expand on that, fisheyes can definitely be sick when used properly. The problem is that so many people just slap them on and shoot random shit, which is good if you're doing lomography, but that's an entirely different slice of bread.

Fisheyes can be used for weird abstract angles like filming cityscape time lapses and shit, but you're definitely going to get more bang for your buck out of a flash.

As for action shots, I guess it's preference. I personally hate them for ski photography, but that effect might be something you really covet, so who knows. Just know that it's much easier to be creative with a flash than a fisheye.

Wait are you just buying a single flash or a flash kit? because just buying a single flash is going to be useless. Glass is way more important than light IMO. You dont need expensive flashes to get greative with light, your already doing it with headlamps. Go for the lens, but maybe not a fisheye.

yeah I was just looking at getting the SB-600. I dont have any experience with flashes being that I got my first dSLR less than a year ago. and i dont have time to research anything right now since finals are coming up.

I'm just starting to think the lens is a better choice since I really like shooting the sky in low light. and I like the perspective you get from a fisheye on those shots.
