thanks for the heads up dudes on the whole saftey thing......we are looking at avalanche beacons and this is more of an exploratory hike to scout conditions.

I'm only looking out for your safety when I say this. Exploratory hikes for conditions aren't worth it as conditions and risks change by the day, if not the hour.

You can ski Tucks anytime. It is never too early. With that said, renting/owning a beacon doesn't mean you're safe. There is much more to safety in dangerous terrain than carrying all the gear with you. The information you learn from an experienced, certified guide is invaluable.

If you're really going up to scout the terrain, you should be 110% fine hiking to the base of little headwall or to the top of little headwall if there's a strong boot pack and low avy danger on the lower headwall. Ask the caretaker what he thinks about hiking lower headwall w/o beacons when you get to the Hermit Lake Shelter.

You can easily scope Tucks lines from either of those two points and ski down Sherborne Trail.

Below is why I say beacons won't do you any good. This is a slide from about a week ago that stretched across 80% of the headwall. The slab is well over 10 feet tall and was naturally triggered.
