Final cut express HD painfully slow

so i've just started working with final cut express on my macbook, figuring it out and getting comfortable with everything. i've got about two minutes of footage edited into the first half of an edit, and now pretty much everytime i click anything, or scroll anywhere with the cursor, my computer gets the spinning beachball of doom and is frozen for like a minute before it unfreezes and does whatever i clicked. for instance, i'll click "play" and it'll freeze for like a minute before it finally plays.

is this normal for final cut? or is there anything i can do to make it less slow?

alright i shut down the computer over night and it hasn't had any gay pauses yet, but i've only used it for like 5 minutes. i found a hard drive, which i'm gonna use to put all future footage we get on so i don't have to clog up the computer. hopefully that won't be too much of a pain to do.

i'll bump this if it starts being slow again, but the computer is a macbook pro 15 inch intel core duo with a 2.16 Ghz processor. thats about all i know haha.
