Whats gonna happen to my knee??

Well, Ive just come out of surgery from an arthroscopy (spp?) And the docs told me that ive ruptured my acl (in half) torn some cartilage whcih has been removed and damaged my medial ligament.
Know im not a doctor but i reckon that sounds bad. Will i be able to ski again?? is the park something i have to avoid for the rest of my life? Can my acl ever be repaired? If you had to put my knee before the accident at 100% what percentage can i hope to achieve with the proper rehab?
Fuck im so depressed.
If anyone knows anything, like how long im out for, suggestions for rehab, Hope for skiing future.
Id be really gratefull.

last year i tore my acl, mcl, both miniscus, and shattered my tibia. people told me i would never EVER ski or do any sports again. now, 12 months later, i am out killing it on the slopes at about 90%. my advice is dont let anthing that peole tell you get you down. give your knee the time it needs, and do your rehab. if you truly want to ski again, you will.

Whatever you do, make sure you do the rehab the doctor prescribes. A friend of mine didn't and now he is worse off than he started.

So what kind of level of fitness and strength can i hope to achieve from my knee. is the park gonna be a fond distant memory?

If you do all your rehab you're looking at 1 year to be 100%. 9 months to ski again but very simple carving. It will come back.

think about it this way. The ACL is a major ligament in your knee (I believe connecting the ACL connect the back of your femur to the front of your tibia - could be wrong though). However, there are many pro athletes that no longer have an ACL at all (rehabed the muscles to make up for the torn ACL - I think Joe Montana was one of them, but there are a bunch in the NFL), did they repair your ACL?
The MCL (medial ligiment you spoke of - I'm pretty sure) is on the side of your knee (outside I think), but I don't remember clearly if its the indside or outside of the knee. This should heal if its only damaged, most likely it will hurt, but from the sounds should heal.
Now, the important thing has already been said, listen to your doctors, and rehab your knee properly. You will most likely have to build up the muscles around all the damaged ligaments to compensate, but it will only help. You will also most likely have to wear a brace on your knee (but this should really only impact lateral movement in the knee - do you race?).
Overall, you should still be able to ski, but it will/should take some time. Once you are back on the skis, take it easy at first and feel things out, slowly build back up to where you were before it happened. Honestly, you might not ski the rest of this season, but if you take care of it properly, you will most likely not loose too much ability when you get back on skis.
Look at it this way too, you can still go to the ski area and chill with people and work the ''I'm injured'' mack on all the ladies.
life is too short to have any regrets

I tore my ACL last season (March) end of the season. Last competition during practice, actually. Cartlidge was fine and everything else was good, too, but I am out here this season without surgery and skiing on it. I was too young for surgery to be done, I'm only 15, and the growth plate would have had to be drilled through, making one leg longer than the other as I grow. So, this season I'm just wearing a brace and took it easy from the start and am just now starting to get some confidence. Not to mention I worked my ass off during the off season over the summer and everything, definitely damn lucky to be able to do everything that I'm able to do. I still work it out to keep the strength up two days a week and during the off season I did certain things three times a week and most stuff five times a week, which overall has made the muscles around my knee much stronger which can maybe get me through this season and more to come.
Overall, you should be fine to ski when you feel the time is right, which you will know when that is. Don't get down about it, I did that and yeah, in the end it sucked, but I'm sure it'll be for the better in the end possibly. Just work your ass off, never know man, if you're super lucky you can be back carving around end of the season. Just before you try anything, make sure to talk to your doctors, and also make sure you feel it's the right time. Don't let yourself get impatient and do something that you're not ready for. Take your time and work hard.

Midwest and manus. thanks for your detailed replys. Theve cheered me up no end.
Just to answer you questions. At the moment i have to acl so im looking to build up my muscle around my knee. i do have the option to go on the list for an acl rebuild but im not sure what is the best thing to do.
As far as braces go i dont race at all but i ski quite hard. So i pretty much spend all my time in the park.
Thanks again for your replys and ill be quitre sure to do all my rehab.

BigRich- dont use a brace, it puts strain on parts of your body that arent supposed to be strained. just take it easy skiing for a while and build your quads and knees back up. then you wont need a brace. ive been skiing since thanksgiving and just like LAST week started hitting jumps again and killing it. just give it time, after your surgery and what, it will teach you to learn what your body is doing. you will know of youre over doing it or not. (i dont know if anyone already wrote taht above i didnt bother reading)

^ braces dont strain parts of your body, what are you talking about. the point of a post-surgery knee brace is just to make sure your knee doesnt get tweaked if you crash. As long as you do your rehab, and take it easy at first until you regain your strength you'll be fine.

honestly if half of your acl(anterior crutial ligament) is torn your not ganna be able to hit big jumps because your knee will be too weak to take that impact, not to mention one little jolt of the knee and it will be completly blown.
if you dont play any other sports then my suggestion would be to ski the rest of the season with a good ass brace, probally wont be able to do a lot of park shit... and then at the end of the season get acl reconstuction... honestly if your acl is 50% torn then its just going to be a matter of time before its totaly blown. its better that you are careful about it cause its just your acl... if you go to hard you can tear your mcl and menicus as well... and your pcl.
i unfourtunatly just tore my acl too... my case is a little diffrent cause i play d1 soccer and i need to get better so i can play next season at 100%, but i am working my ass off and i plan to be running in 3 months, if you have any question message me cause im going through this shit... it sucks but theres just certain stuff everyone goes through in their life.....

i tore my acl in half last season along with my meniscus, and got misdiagnosed. this postponed my surgery until 3 months ago. since surger, i've worked out my knee as much as it could handle, and still do. The muscle mass is up to par with what it used to be, but the cadaver tendon is still bonding, or whatever it does that takes 9 months.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I just blew my knee out, ACL and half a meniscus, on a traverse. Just went too fast, hit a big bump in an akward way, twisted backwards and fell. Since I JUST did today, I can't be of much help in how rehab will go, but think of this: Devun Walsh blew his knee a few seasons ago, and now he's killing it harder than ever. Boyd Easley blew his knee, had his ACL replaced with pig parts, and is back to killing it, as far as I know. I can post a bigger list later, but you get the idea: Blown knees don't mean the end of riding, if you want it bad enough.
My personal advice on the half torn thing(I'm the furthest thing from a doctor...): Get it fixed. ASAP. Turning groomers for the rest of the season isn't worth it.
