So our seasons are pretty short out here, probably only got 7-8 more weeks of skiing if we're lucky, 5 if we aren't.  I decided I'm going to take up surfing again this summer.  I used to do it back when I was a kid, but I outgrew my short board to the point where it was unusable, and I haven't been on one in a good 5 years at least.  I live in SoCal so its always sort of pissed me off that I don't surf, and with this ski season being my most active one to date, I think I'm going to miss the lack of sport in my life.  So its time to start surfing.

Does anyone know of a good Surfing forum to hit up?  Like one where I can find out some spots and figure out which gear to buy and such?  I can only remember how to get to one of the spots I used to hit up.  Any help is appreciated all the ones I turned up on Google were pretty shitty.

Also whats like the best surf movie ever?  Just to get pumped.  Out There from TGR looks cool but probably has too many old people complaining about the environment in it.

Oh and is there a Surfing cult?  I wouldn't be surprised.

Check the last hunting yeti episode, they surf in that.
I want to surf to but i don't have a board, i'm in NJ.

i surf everyday, my apartment is across the road from the beach, just get out there every second you have spare, you wont regret it.
if you have the cash to spend on multiple boards in like 4 mths go buy like a 9' mal just to get your paddle and water skills up and just cruise around and then go buy like a 6' 6'' fish or semi fish, it will set you up to progress so much faster.

surf forums you could use swell net or for just forum stuff realsurf.com has a real ns vibe just a little bit older but mostly aussie surfers.

movies check out stranger then fiction by taylor steele, its the best movie of last year, slipping jetstreams is also sick. any thing with rob machado in it the guy could get anyone stoked on surfing.

get out there man but be careful it will take over your life.

This might sound kinda gay but when i was little i used to boogie board a lot and i just got into surfing this past summer and boogie boarding really helped with paddling and just the feel for the wave, and when you get good it gets really fun you can carve with it and spin. and if you dont like it its not a big loss because a good boogie board cost like $75 bucks opposed to $600 on a surfboard. good luck with it whatever you choose.

oh and where abouts in so cal, there are spots all over the shop, head to a surf shop let them know you are a novice and looking for a good place to lean there are so many mush waves all over cali but there are also waves there that will kill the fuck out of you, not just the wave but the people i heard can be pretty hectic.

1. I am not from SoCal, but this website seems to have some good ones, they might be played because they are labelled on the internet, but I might be wrong. Surfline is pretty good and GlobalSurfers is also pretty good. Maybe even Transworld Surf. The best thing to do would be to go to your old spot and try and find some people to surf with/know some spots. Your local surf shop is the best place to go. There are a lot in SoCal, so just try and find some people and see which shops they like the best.

2. I love "Riding Gaints," mostly about the history of surfing, but very entertaining. This question is best answered by your local shop guys. Just look around on Zapiks or other video sites for movies.

Riding Giants is awesome! I know the people who made it, actually. Also, Step Into Liquid is very well made and get's me stoked. I'm pumped to start surfing again when all the snow melts as much as I'll miss hitting the slopes.

Hey thanks for all the advice guys, I'll probably go ask the local surf/snow/skate shop where some good spots are, that seems like a good idea.  I actually have seen Riding Giants before but like a couple years ago when it came out, I should give that one a rent.  I'm checking out all those website right now.

It just hit me like yesterday how quickly this season is going to be over.  I hope it gets hot as fuck immediately after the resorts close so I can get out there haha.

You think I should take a lesson first or just grab a friend, rent boards, and head out?  I hope I can fit a 9 foot longboard in my GTI.

^get a winersuit and u can surf in the cold

i surf in the uk and it is preety much always cold here and in my suit i am warm
only problem is ur face gets so cold it hurts to smile after a good wave

lessons are good becasue they teach you the right way to do stuff so you dont pick up bad habits and set you back. saying that you really only need a few lessons to teach you how do get up and how to pump after that there is not much they can teach you for a while, so lean that go cruise then come back and lean to turn and slash and snap and whatnot you will be ripping in no time.
