The only explaination i can come up with is that society has evolved...Look around and back in history, and stuff has been going on, and i think that the hate and violence and lack of respect has just evolved to a 'higher' form.

one of the major reason that religion, well the Catholic religion. which i am, has declined alittle is that ppl are losing sum faith with about 9/11 and about the priests accused of being sexual predators

i dont believe religion is the only thing.. but.. when everyone had faith and believed in 'the ways' of religion. the percentage of 'rebelious' people was way fewer than today.. if you've ever seen sister act.. hardly anyone went to church because it is a pretty boring place. and u need to be motivated to go. as humans we are naturally lazy. so why bother going if we are going to be bored?? with that attitiude people stop going. which results in a mjor percentage of people not believing.. and if they dont believe in something that is giving them structure and security.. they are going to not really understand their boundaries,. or believe in punishment.. christians and many others believe in Hell. and sins... aswell as other religions. i dunno i was just trying to say that there is a reduced number of religious ppl. and a higher crime rate. and way back when it was the other way around..

I agree that in general religions can be detrimental... but then again, if we were all God-loving and abiding Mormons, then the world would be a beautiful place.

i think that science has effected the church. and people are less religouse then the past. but i dunno.

people are less religious than before because of science, yes.. but i think moreso because of the growth in other things to live for. ie - money. and this is where the rise in crime comes in. greed.. i don't really have to write any more. i dunno, that's my just my opinion.

Look at Ireland, the Middle East, WW2, The Crusades, All of teh bloodiest wars and masscres of all time have been in teh name of religion. If we were all the same religion, these conflicts would have been less bloddy if you ask me.

um, I was not going to say anything, and I apologize for sounding like a bitch ahead of time, but... I cannot read your article without getting a headache. I think it's a very serious and valid discussion which normally I would take part in, but I cannot struggle through the punctuation and grammatical errors of your article. Periods go at the end of an entire, completed sentence, not where your brain pauses in thought. It's one thing to post butchered up thoughts in the forum, but I would hope that posting an article would call for a little more careful writing. I'm sorry. Also, if English is your 2nd language please disregard this entire post.

I got a lot of beef with religion. I could go on and on...

Basically my belief tho...

Religion causes violence. WW2, Crusades, Spanish Armada... all examples of conflicts where religion played major role as a cause.

Religion is such a strong point in a lot of people... that they can't stand being told that something else MIGHT be right.

Personally... nothing against any religious on here, but how can you say your religion is right when there are sooo many diffrent ones, all claiming somehting different?

Who is to tell me what my morals should be. I believe in being spiritual, but most religions tell you exactly how you should live. If you are kind and caring and are a good person, it doesnt matter about anything else. Do it your way I say. Some churches are really cool about stuff like that. But often religion can be used by charismatic leaders to lead otherwise good people o do horrific things.

well said skier X. people do fucked up thing because of religion, but people also do things just because.......who really knows. sorry, but what does the Christian Bible say? I suppose I'm a little biased, being a Christian and all, but I look at what everyone is saying on here and it seems as though you're all pointing to something that you know is there, but can't quite see. It's like skiing a mountain that you haven't scoped beforehand. You know you have to get to the bottom, but you can't decide which line to run.
In differing opinions, I have taken the hard path, and the easy path. My hard path is dealing with ignorant people who WON'T see any other point of view but their own, and are so closed to God that that tranlates into being closed to me. I don't like that. I like being friendly with everybody. My easy path is knowing, again in my opinion, what's going to happen when I die, and also knowing that things which happen while I'm on this world are all working together for my good. Going back to my mountain example; you're turning around a rock, but in doing so, you hit your slough and tumble. The nurse that comes to your aid ends up being the woman that you fall in love with... I believe that everything happens for a reason, and that reason is to bring glory to God.
Why the Christian faith (religion is different) and not Roman Catholisism, Buddhism, Taoism...? The God of the bible is the only God who claims to be Creator. To me, the earth is a testament to that. I can't stand at the top of Stratton, or Blue, and look over the hills, trees, water, grass, animals, and the sky without being drawn to thoughts of a higher being. To think some people believe that it was all an accident, or some freak of science...

Oh yes, there was a comment in the article about the pedophile Catholic priest- try telling me I'll never be married, never have sex, live by myself, never drink, never smoke, never watch tv. I think what happened was inevitable! When a CHURCH tells someone that they have to pay money or go to hell, it's time for a reformation. For a church that says they believe in the bible, and yet put a priest as an earthly representative of Christ to forgive sins- that's not the Bible. Jesus alone can save souls.
Sorry if I sound like I'm preaching, because that's definetely not what I am. These are Biblical views, therefore my views. I couldn't possibly cover every topic that was presented in this thread, but I hope I shed some light on the ones I did. I'm not saying that religion is wrong, or untrue... im just trying to be objective.

What exactly makes Christianity more real then Hinduism, or say Confucionism (sorry, i know i spelled it wrong? Sure it is true that Jesus Christ was a individual... but objectivly...whats the true proof that he did what has been stated?

There is no real reason why any certain religion can be considered more real, and true.

Ok, pretty much all the replys so far have been split 50/50 betten people thinking it has no effect and people thinking it has all effect. I think there has been enough instances (middle east and WWII being the ones our generation is most familer with) to prove that people do use religion as an excuse for violence. But the real question is: would these people have commited the acts had there not been religion? And, to anwser that I think that these operations on a huge scale by individuals (like hitler) it may have been inevidtible for some violence to happen but it is the not so extreme people that the religion excuse works for. As well as teh followers of the extremests. In other words for most of the small time violence religion is enough to cover the act in their head (like beating up a kid or something) but for the huge acts of violence the leader may have done it no matter what but if they hadn't have used religion on their side they wouldn't have won the support of the other people (best example WWII). I think thats pretty choppy, but you get the idea of what I'm saying.

What really makes me wonder about all this fighting between Jews Palestinians, Muslims Christians is that while we all believe in different things and diff ways to practice out religion is that we believe in the SAME GOD. This is so F-cked up its unbelieveable that we can be killing ppl because we all believe that there is only one big guy upstairs.

I think its great, BUT look at your first few lines...You are getting really upset at people who dont have the same beliefs as you. Because this is what you believe in very strongly, other believe just as strongly in their beliefs. Think of them thinking of you as an infidel in the same right. It brings conflict like nothing else does. I am neither bashing nor praising any religion or any faith, btu i believe that religion can bring about mass conflict. I also believe religion is neccessary and valuable in our world, so I have no solution.

I totally understand what you're saying, and I'm not denying that people do use religion as an excuse for needless killing. But I'm not advocating any of these religions. 'religion' is a word that, sadly, has been linked to God. Anyone can make a religion thats main goal is to beat up little kids. Christianity is a faith that does not kill people. When people like Bin Laden and Hitler use religion as a crutch for killing innocent people, that's not religion, that's sin. Big difference. They're not doing anyone any favours.

Sorry, but I haven't read up enough about the crusades to really pose an opinion either way... I'm not copping out, I know basically what happened, but not nearly as much as I should. All I can say right now is that according to the Bible, we're all sinful creatures, and sometimes we can't do everything right. I can assure you that if we meet, I won't pull a crusade on your ass.

Ya I guess I just mean that religion brings out very strong beliefs, like anything else that is important to people. Also look at the conflict even between Christians in Ireland. And this is between sects of the same religion! These are not the faults of the actual religion itself, but of the people who are so narrow minded I guess. But religion acan be used by evil people to accomplish evil goals. I believe that if everyone followed their religions exactly as they were intended, these conflicts would not exist. All religions teach peacefullness and tolerance, it is the people who distort the original intentions to pursuade others who I believe should go to Hell.
And I know this is a touchy subject, so I'm not going to touch on it further.
