**should i teach disabled kids to ski?**

ok, so heres the deal. Over spring break, there is a volunteer opportunity to teach disabled kids how to ski. This will count as volunteer hours for highschool and its also some free ski time. I dont really know if i should do this or not. i want your help. Could you answer with a yes or a no and if you want say why. But no harsh comments please!

If you would genuinely like to help disabled kids then yes. If you want to do it so you can ski for free, then definitely not.

i mean my ski seasons over cuz i have no money and i kinda do wanna help the kids out. I know some of the kids. Theyre nice and energetic

It's all right to teach them how to ski to have a free pass. That's pretty much as if you were paid to do it so I don't see anything wrong. Plus, they're probably having a hard time to find volunteers so you'll probably help them a lot. DO IT !

im signed up for my local sit down volenteer thing. i have not done it a whole lot yet, ut it would def be a legit way of giving back to the sport, more so than lessons teaching gapers how to ski. also, you get to ride in it to learn what it feels like for them, and how to intruct them, which is def fun.

Hell yes! looks great on the college resume and you'll morally feel amazing (thats what im thinking, ive never really taught a handicaped person to ski)

Seriously though, skiing is the greatest thing on earth, because someone is missing a leg, or is blind doenst mean they have to miss out.

do it for sure

My high school had mandatory community service hours. I decided to get involved with SkiForAll, an organization here in WA that teaches disabled adults and children how to ski.

TOTALLY loved it.

1) You get a pass. you may be a volunteer, but hey, its a nice benefit and great incentive.
2) You learn how to teach. I got a level 1 certification through it, and could have done more, for free, if I wanted to.
3) You get to ski.
4) You make new friends, and girls dig ski instructors.
5) You get to teach. Few people get these moments, but when I saw my kid, Austin, who had downs syndrome, finally do a parallel turn after weeks of wedging... I cant describe the feeling, its something you'll understand when it happens.

Do it. 100%.

(Also, season aint over just cause you teach, you get lunch breaks and nights, plus any cancellations!)

im doing the same thing for my interim. I would say go for it man. if your organization is as dope as challenge aspen is then i think you will defiently enjoy yourself

i think all of us on ns feel that skiing is an important part of our lives. skiing is something that we all love and i think it would be awesome to have the chance to help someone fall in love with something that has been a positive impact on your life. think of all of the good times and experiences you have had because of skiing; on and off the hill. for me, i know it's changed my perspective on a lot of things. these kids should get to experience something that's so awesome, no matter what the circumstance. think of how amazing you'd feel in possibly helping one of these kids find their niche?

i hope you do it. i think it would be a great opportunity for not only them, but you.

doing volunteer work or anything for a good cause is some serious morale boostage. Id do it in a heartbeat. theres no reason to not teach kids, disabled or not, how to participate in our amazing sport.

yes if your sure you can handle it.... they will be harder work than you think (no disrespect to either party) and you want to make sure you dont throw it in on them... if you can, then yeah itd be rad of you and +karma will follow u round

i'd do it, i used to teach for a bit and it can be fun and rewarding, and if it means you get to ski then that's another perk.

in my mind helping people out+having fun doing it+skiing=a yes!

yeah dude definitely...i worked with a similar program in steamboat and its kinda overwhelming at times but its a cool thing to do and your skiing while doing it and i looks way good on college applications and shit like that ya diig

yes you should. It's my sixth season teaching disabled kids to ski, not going to lie, there are some very frustrating situations that you will probably have to deal with but its so worth it when you see them having fun or when they've accomplished something. Out of curiosity, what disabilities will you possibly be working with?

If you have a lot of patience, go for it. The rewards are all over the place.  If not, don't bother.

My dad's buddy was in an accident and ended up a quadripilegic, so my dad coached him in the special olympics for Australia. He gets all teary eyed when he looks at the pictures

Do it. DO IT. I used to teach adaptive surf lessons and it was so much fun. It's fun sharing your passion with kids who are generally marginalized and excluded form this type of thing. They have SO much fun and are SO eager to try something new.

If you're patient, like kids, and want to share your passion, you HAVE to do it. It's amazing.

After college I'm planning on moving to Ketchum to work with Sun Valley Adaptive. I'm so excited.

Do it, post back. I want to hear what you end up doing.

It will be a very tough job, but teaching disabled kids to ski, that's awesome.  They'll probably love it, so I say do it.

def go for it. ive done that myself and i have to say, even if you get to ski less than you think, its still a great experience! I loved it, but be aware, if you do it, you cannot do it half right…

I coach special olympics ski team, its pretty sick. Its only 1 day a week, the kids are cool and my friends coach too. What usually happens is after we finish skiing, the other coach takes the kids in and i do a park run.
