Waxing?

Whats ur opinion on waxing? and how often do you wax? does a new coat of wax help you at all in the park besides getting to hits with more speed? i just wanna see other takes on the issue.  because i dont see the point in waxing when youre going to screw around in the park anyways. (im not saying that screwing around in the park is a bad thing i do it 90% of the time)

 keeps my bases looking nice
plus get a flavored wax and your skis smell like a fruit salad.  it's awesome.

i usually wax every weekend or other weekendand it helps a lot. i also dont spend the whole day in the park and a good wax helps tremendously. it doenst help as much in the park unless ur not getting enough speed for jumps but still helps overall. tho it will come off fast from rails and stuff

I wax after about every two days out. If not for the speed, but to take care of my bases and stop them from drying out.

i wax  every 2 weeks unless the snow is shit then i wax 1 a week

I wax a couple of times a week, but I have a waxing buisness so its not too hard for me to wax mine with the other peoples. I find it helps me with getting speed for hits but it seems to slide smoother on the rails after they're waxed.  It also helps keep your skiis in better condition if you want to resell or something.

wax once a week and sharper your edges so your skis will always feel same so you can get used the feeling. don't wax your skis for three weeks, hit the same jump every day and then wax'em and hit the jump again like your used to.... be sure to bring your tranny finder. also taking care of your shit makes your skis respond way better, they do what you want.

i dont advise sharpening your edges.
mine are really dull, especially right around the midsole for rails.
if its not your much more likely to catch an edge.

Helps with getting the speed on huge jumps...Doesn't help on rails.

I wax them like once per 3 weeks because there's a jump at my local mountain that is hard to get the speed without waxing your skis.

i tune skis/boards for work, so i end up waxing mine every other day.  especially when the temperature/weather/snow changes, i put a diff. wax on...  i like to be fast

my dakine all temp kind of smells tropical cocktail-ish.  all i know is that the scent lasts a few trips.  and that is sick.

i have never ever waxed my skis. iv skied 3-4 days a week since november 9th on the same pair. never waxed once.

just do its really nice to ski on a fast ski vs a slow dry ski. it takes two seconds and people will buy a nice kept base over a shitty one when ur trying to sell them.

every 2 days ish, but when I am up skiing For more than 2 days in a role I don't think about it and give them an extra coat when I eventually get around to it

I haven't waxed my skis in like a month but its because I have to either

a) Leave my skis at Sport Chalet for like a week
b) Drive like an hour to a ski shop in LA and then wait around with nothing to do for an hour, then drive an hour back
c) Learn how to wax and buy an iron

Its actually sort of pissing me off

just buy the cheapest iron u can find at walmart and learn to wax ur own skis. not hard at all. 1st melt wax on iron while holing iron vertically over ur ski so that little drops of wax fall on the base. once theres a decent amount of wax droplets on ur base use the iron to spread the wax out smooth but rubbing the iron over the bases. then after the wax dries scrape off the excess

to save wax rub it on instead of drip then you dont have to scrape and you save your wax

let it sit overnight before scraping, if you scrape at all.   and wax is cheap...  just buy clearance from backcountry and chat up free shipping.

I guess I'll join the argument,

When you drip wax on you also want to wait for a while to let the wax be absorbed into the base.  The heat from the iron open the "pores" on the ski for the wax to go into.  Then let it cool down scrape off whats left and away you go.  I wax mine once a week to keep them fast and my bases in good shape.

Does anyone have the dakine rub on wax (high octane) SHIT SMELLS SO GOOD!!!!! I often find myself sniffin it for awhile before i put the finishing coat of speed wax on.

But anyway i wax my skis every 3 times i ski gotta keep the bases fresh
I hot wax them,scrape them then apply this high octane dakine wax for extra speed and life !

I WAS BORN TO GO FAST

for me, the hardest part if getting a table or something to wax them on

I use my moms ironing board and what not, but i drip wax all over and the scrappings are hard to pick up since its carpet (but its the laudnry room so its not nice or anything). its hard to scrape, i have to basically hold it on my shoulder and scrape, its a bitch. I really want to set up a table and make a cheap vice or something so hold the skis

im saying rub it on and iron it after its the difference beetween if you drip it on or rub it on you have to iron it on no matter what

i could see that for waxing, but what about scraping? how to you get the ski or the milk crates to not move when you scrape?

and about grip wax, that doesnt really make sense. the whole idea of wax is to cause friction with the snow and create water, which the ski then glides ontop of because the wax is hydrophobic. if it gripped... well then you woulnt move....

I just throw down a large beach towl and stand the ski on top of it and do my scraping while holding the ski up. Then I  shake the towl outside. It would be nice to have a work bench/vises, but I do it the poor man way.

they stay for me.
but if the ski moves, it is the tip of the ski.
so you can scrape the tail first, then weight that end of the ski down.

hmmm, i'll probably end up building something since i should have a large amount of free time this summer

and I've heard of Kick Wax, which i guess is the same as Grip Wax. I dont exactly know what it does though, maybe it grips the snow so hard, that the movement of the ski creates even more friction and therefor even more water to flow under the ski? beats me

I was completely wrong, its for x-country skis

wikipedia : "When properly selected and applied, the wax in the kick zone grips the snow and allows the skier to propel him or herself forward. A well selected grip wax will release its hold on the snow as the pressure on the kick zone is released."

It's for cross country skiis. They need friction on the snow to get more pressure when running on the snow and so they don't slide when they're going up hill.

When I don't have a table I either ski the wax off or just hold it, it's not too hard.

dont rails and boxes take off all the wax underfoot after about 3 hits? or does it stay on your bases even if you hit rails/boxes repeatedly?

It certainly shortens the life span of the wax, but wax soaks into your base.  Hitting 3 rails wont take all of the wax off.
