Tuckermans revine

hey my dad and i want to go ski tuckermans revine this spring and i was wondering if anyone has here has done it and has any information on it.  I have a few questions like when is the best time to go, are there cool cliffs, how is the snow.......?    im just looking for some general information.  thanks

avvy danger is usually too high to ski it until mid-to-late spring.  you can usually go as late as june.  the snow is super super heavy corn snow, not pow.  there are some cliffs dead center of tucks, but its rare that they get hit.  there are some smaller cliffs in the drop skiers right of tucks, hellmans highway.  its best to go early to mid april IMO.  ive been many many times, skied tucks, hellmans, dodges, gulf of slides, finger chutes, gulf of slides is a fun one, but its a longer hike.  not many people venture that far over. 
just keep an eye out for 1 or 2 big death crevasses that normally form, and if you to tucks try to go all the way up to the peak of washington and ride the snowfields that lead into tucks if its any good.  also, check this website a lot for updates on base levels and avvy danger.

Here is the official website on skiing there.

May/June are the best time to go up there, but temperatures are usually on the colder side; snow is possible during anytime of the month.

There are not that many cliffs, just look at this picture. Also, remember that it is awhile away from medical assistance, so don't go too crazy.

Snow conditions vary, check around the time you are thinking of going.

i'll be heading up this spring also, not many cliffs, they're either small or a series of little rocks that would kill you
the snow is really heavy corn stuff, you want fat stiff skis with touring bindings
it's a skin in and then a bootpack to the top, you just make the call how high you want to go
it's super fun just make sure you're smart up there, check the avy conditions, don't ski too fast, and pay attention

yea i think late march is prime time. i know my physics teacher made trips up there last year and showed us videos of him skiing in class haha. looked quite steep and awesome. i wish i wasnt like 1000 miles away lol

Haa we last year made this cliff jump on tucks, cause i didnt find it worth it to hike to the top top to shralp turns.. but the jump was fun, and u could easily make a rock stall... The pic of the cliff jump is in my pics if u want to peep it.

Oh Tucks, how I miss you!

I used to ski it back in the day when I lived in NH.  We would ski it in April I believe.  You hike up that long-ass trail to the bowl area, find a rock to make "base camp" and then put your boots on and hike up one of the sick lines. 

We always did the left chute, or the headwall.  There's a snowfield up top past the headwall. It's pretty steep terrain and isn't for people who don't know their shit.  Usually like 1000 people up there on a sunny spring weekend day.

Although this could have all changed since then. It's been about 10 years since I've skied it. Haha.

You should ski it though, it's pretty badass and some of the better NH "hardcore" out there.

And if any of you need a history lesson, look up the Egan brothers.  They used to HUCK off the headwall.

Its eastern snow...not many cliffs. 
It's quite steep for the east if you go over the headwall.  Go over to the left or right for some less advanced skiing
Be careful, you are a good 5-6 mile hike from help. 
Don't do it until late april/may due to avalanche danger.
Mt. Washington has really high winds.
use beater/rock skis

p.s. SOME of the people on "timefortuckermans.org" site are D-bags (I posted on a blog there a while back and got ripped on for asking a simple question, like if there were any groups going up on specific days).  they think they are hot shit, and are somewhat territorial.  while others are quite helpful.  but def. check out the site, it has good information from some tucks vets.

Word.  Good idea.  It sucks coming down from the bowl with no trail to ski down. 

Oh, and I hope you're in decent shape, skiing down that trail is interesting late in spring.  Bring rock skis, it's about a 3 mile run too.

The slide danger on Mt Washington is not too high mid-season to ski. I've skied it in Dec, Jan, March, April, and May. It's all dependent on the previous weather and the part of the mountain you ski. Slides occurring constantly throughout the year is a common misconception, but it's good to tell people it will slide because the biggest danger is other skiers. Proof is in the number of people who sit on lunch rocks to spectate, below the wind load.

Slides happen through May and June depending on snow fall. The runnels last year could've swallowed a car. A slide came through GoS chute 1 in late April that snapped 1 foot diameter trees in half.

Stick to Tucks late April and you'll be fine. There're so many people there the weekend after most resorts close that your biggest risk is someone falling down the hill.

go early enough and you can ski the way down instead of hiking out (talking late march to early april) anything after that there wont be enough snow, but you can ski it until may I would say, its a great hike and great skiing, great overall time

the one time i did tucks it was mad late, trail was hike only. i was 13.

3 mile up with heavy ass skis, ski for a few runs, then hike down= soooo shitty.

but i am no longer a little kid adn could handle it haha.


im thinkin of doing a trip this year

I'm gonna be hitting it up in a week or two. I've gotta gear up (beacon/alpine trekkers/skins/shovel/probes). Pretty high avey warnings in February so I'm not risking it without the proper equipment.

the thunderbolt ski trail on mt greylock is supposedly the best its been in years right now. Its a steep hike up but its a fun day trip.

I went the weekend of the inferno last year(mid to late april), it was pretty much perfect conditions. Little to no wind and very warm. An advantage of the inferno weekend is that they have medical people up in the ravine so if something were to happen you are a lot better off. Oh and bring lots and lots of water, more than you think you will need. I was super dehydrated by the end of the day (the beers did not help).
