The Environmental impact of the ski industry: What do you think?

Liberty Larose's are made with bamboo, my brother has them and loves them.  So light and poppy, you could say bamboo is legit

sick! when i heard salomon was messing around with it i knew it had to be decent at least, they arent really the type to experiment tooooo much. im stoked to hear this tho

if you truly care about your impact on the environment then you all should should just commit hari kari - I mean really, want to do something about it?  Get the hell off the earth, might as well take a few million with you while you are at it.

Otherwise we all are hypocrits, everything we consume just pollutes things more and more. Pick on skiing, pick on baseball, hell, pick on saling in a regatta, those fucking boats and the materials in them.. wtf....  who the fuck really cares? we say we care, so we do little drops in the bucket to make ourselves feel better? Is it really better than not doing nothing at all, does it really make a difference..   think about it.  meanwhile what do we do?  procreate and multiply lots of new polluters.

How in hell do you buy enough carbon offsets for bearing a child? Or whatever those silly things are called.

yeah..  I sniped a half dozen ski patrollers the other day. I figure I saved the earth of 14 billions tons of carbon whatever since they and the possibilty of generations of future off springs won't happen now.

Now that I think about it.  Look how great wars are for our enviornment.  Imagine if we were a peaceful people and no one ever died in a war.  OMG..  the Earth certainly would be dead by now from shear depletion of resources.

SO yeah..  want to do something that has a real impact on the environment.  Start a war and get rid of a bunch of humans.

Pessimistic!

I don't like your negativity towards.... well, everything environmental.


there are lots of things we (as an individual who likes to ski, and as the ski industry) can do to make our impact on the environment very small, if there at all. People like you who are full of negativity and don't actually change anything in your life are the ones to blame.


From now on, for all environmental discussions I will have to ask you to follow the golden rule of "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". If you're happy with destroying our eco systems while saying there's nothing we can do to save it, well, I don't want any of it, thank you very much.

I've read alot of shit on here about how bad the ski industry is for the environment and I think the point has been clearly made IT'S PRETTY BAD!!!

Instead of complaining about it can anyone think of more we as regular skiers can do to minimise the impact we have???

Eg

- Don't drive to the resort in your own truck or SUV. Carpool or take the shutle!!

- Don't toss litter around or off the lift when you're on the hill.

You get the idea.....!!  

no sledding, or heli skiing.

only support hills that are a) relatively low for environmental impacts and/or b) actually doing something to change

locate yourself close the hill, and carpool/pick up hitch hikers/ use the shuttle if one exists

support the companies that are putting an effort into change. this goes for both soft good and hard goods. and if it all possible, don't buy shit that was made in China.

remember your three R's. Especially 'reduce' and 'reuse' I find that people are too caught up in image and completely ignore these two.
If you have a rip in your jacket or the zipper broke or the cuffs are falling apart or (heaven forbid!) it's not the latest in trends, this does NOT mean you have to buy a new jacket. I was skiing with a dude a week ago that had a North Face jacket and he had been using it for over a decade and it was still in fine working condition.

get involved with your community in your town and at your hill (this includes the management of the hill itself and those that use the hills services) and try to initiate change. make an effort.

use your brain, i'm sure you folks can think of many ways to make your footprint smaller.

and when the plane ticket comes for you to come here to Japan to shred epic amounts of pow.  Cash it in, buy some seeds and plant a garden to help offset your carbon footprint. 

Oh crap..  don't do that!  Do you know how much deisel is used to cultivate the plants for those seeds and for processing said seeds or how much crap the factories spewed to produce the packaging?  Don't get me started on all the pollution created during the research and development of those plants for the seeds.  lets talk about the fertilizer.. naaa lets not talk about shit.

naaaaaaa...wait.....  just take the plane ticket. divided by the 300 on the plane, and you might be contributing less pollution than supporting the manufacturer of that pack of seeds.

^Yea On3p is great. Only problem is that On3p uses carbon in their manufacturing which is arguably the worst material to produce in terms of carbon output. Sorry Scott, I just have to be honest.

And Papesteeze, man, you are a bummer. It is old guys like you who are stubborn and unwilling to change, and who got us into this fucking mess in the first place.

Wonder why the pessimism?   dorky? 

It's simple.  Over 3 decades ago, the environmental alarmists of the world were fear mongering how we were going to wipe out the earth by the turn of the millennium.  Rain Forests would be gone, all the oil would be depleted and that we would have to wear respirators to breathe. The teachers in the schools bought into and fed us what they believed during class hours, even going so far as to build curriculum out of it.

Hell, there was even a point in the mid seventies that they were predicting the next ice age would have occurred by now,  backed up with all kinds of o scientific models.

I should have listened to the really smart people (scientific types)  then. They were right, the environmental zealots were wrong. Yet instead of listening to sound reasoning, I bought into the "righteousness" of being environmentally conscious.  I want my money back.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with doing everything you can, to not contribute to the human footprint.  However in the grand scheme of things, I just think that a persons time can be better spent on other things like going skiing!

papa you are just ignorant...as an environmental studies major i am appalled at the sillyness of your comments.

I am a snowmaker and i had to work in the control room a few nights and came across a sheet of the daily power costs for the 07 08 season and they ranged any where from $5,000 to $17,000. Not to green other than the green money.

I think we all should start trekking for our tracks, and not rely so much on lifts/sleds/snowcats to get us to the top, unless it is supporting a place that is powered by wind/some other means of environmentally friendly power. But you have to recognize the fact that even the resorts that advertise as environmentally friendly and 'wind powered' are only doing the bare minimum so that they can use it as a marketing technique and are still chasing profits wherever they can.
