me and come friends are thinking about starting a beer company. and we need some info on what people want so we know where to start so ive devised a small survey to gain some knowledge.

here it goes:

1. your favorite beer

2. price you would pay for beer

3. what kind of beer do you like (pale ale...etc)

4. do you like other flavors in your beer (cherry wheat, lime that kinda thing)

5. bottles or cans

6. would you rather pay for good beer or buy cheap mediocre beer

7. anything else you would like to add to help us out.

1. your favorite beer Moose Drool by Bayern out of Missoula Montana, or just about any Sam Adams

2. price you would pay for beer $7.50 for a 6 pack of microbrews, $15-20 for a case of cheap shit.

3. what kind of beer do you like (pale ale...etc) Any ale, IPAs, just about any stout beer I have had, wheat beers, just about any local brew

4. do you like other flavors in your beer (cherry wheat, lime that kinda thing) Lime, some wheat beers go good with orange slices and orange juice. Cheap shit beer can go good with mountain dew (mountain brew)

5. bottles or cans Draft then bottles then cans

6. would you rather pay for good beer or buy cheap mediocre beer
Cheap mediocre beer for partying, good beer for everything else.

7. anything else you would like to add to help us out.
Kids who post PBR, Key light, etc... need to broaden their tastes.

get a real classy bottle, cause bottle is and will always be the best. and if you have like a cool classe one its even better.
and i would deffinately go with the more expensive one since its a new small company.

I'm 16, i really don't like the taste of alcohol. I can tolerate beer, i would prefer sucking down a couple shots real quick rather then drinking multiple beers (cuz its just quicker since i dont enjoy it).

so basically, if beer is cheap, teenagers will buy and drink it, no avoiding that. Make it taste like soda and less like beer, maybe hardly like beer so it doesnt smell either because i have been caught cuz i smelt like beer. if your beer is cheaper than bud light, easier to drink, and all that, then you have a great product (although you won't produce it like budwiser does...)

thats my very incomplete and unorganized two cents

that would be nice for teens but a major size of the people buying the beer are adults,so the income would be minimal.

In any case I'd say the thread creator has to go for a good beer, because you will never be able to compete with the larger companies if you make cheap beer. And you will have no problems marketing your beer as a micro brew and pricing it as a micro brew. I'd say that's your only real option.

As far as the type of beer you're making, I don't drink really, nor have I had enough different beers to provide you with any real info.....I'd say this site is a bad place to start because not many people on here drink expensive beer.

1. Spotted Cow from new glarus brewery in wisconsin. (could be a good business model too)

base my survey off the fact that:
a. when i drink beer i drink to get drunk

coors or keystone, basically water beer.

ceaper the better, 25$ for a 30 is a price i can deal with.

ive had cherry wheat, its iight. i wouldnt mind trying a cider beer ive heard good things about em.

bottle if im having one with some food. cans if im partying, cause its just gonna go in the pong cups haha.

cheap mediocore. beer isbeer to me. if some one else wants to buy some good hshit ill dirnk it, but for my self id buy cheap stuff.

2. I've paid 8 bucks a bottle, but for every day beer to keep around the house, I just buy a 6 dollar six pack of singha, the best and cheapest asian beer.

3. all? favorites are pale ales and IPAs

4. yes. I have a broad taste in beer. I even like bud light with lime.

5. cans if I'm having guests, cause lugging a garbage bag of bottles sucks. bottles otherwise

6. depends. some good beer has very high alcohol content, but I'm not made of money.

7. if you genuinely love keystone, miller, etc, to me that kind of seems like being attracted to really mediocre-looking girls. if that makes you happy, then cool for you I guess.

doesn't mean we don't ;)

What i said was kinda stupid, i just threw it out there. Budwiser is a huge company and they can do what they do.

As a small company, you should probably make some quality beer for a cheap price. I know my brothers (both legal) really like Blue Moon as a fancyer beer, but they dont get it regularly as its much to expensive for parties...

i think making beer would be so much fun. I would totally suggest just messing around with recipes first before you spend th money to launch a business though. you can try a bunch of different things with additives and such. i think a millet beer would be interesting. try that.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Pyramid Hefeweizen, or any local pale ale, IPA, or wheat beer.

$6-8 for a six pack is fine, although I will occasionally splurge for something really nice.

Pale ales, IPAs, and wheat beers.  Cheap, dark, and light are not in my vocabulary.

If I wanted that kind of flavor it is readily available in the form of bitch beer.

Bottles for taste, or cans if I care about the environment more--although the only good canned beer I can think of is Fat Tire, or maybe Heineken.

Good beer is always worth it, get liquor if you want to get drunk.

since ontario alcohol is 100% govt regulated, we are forced to pay that price (about 38-40$ per 24 of said beer listed). this question i doubt really helps you out

Plain lager (not honey etc.) red beers, and pale ales. Also, not white.

I just was on a trip to the states and tried bud light with lime, and it was good. Wouldn't be a regular buy but would switch it up for it every now and then if it was always available.

bottles for chillin cans for parties

depends if its my 8 months at school or 4 months of summer

5%. I pretty much will never buy a light beer (i know that contradicts the bud light with lime story, but that was a one time thing to try in a foreign country). I like beer that has some umph to it, you know. Not just water.

hope that helps you out a bit. You should really ask where everyone is from so you have some sense of geographic demographics, and age. Im 19 in ontario.

I hardly drink, and only when people buy me beers at the bar. If I was going to buy it though, i would rather pay for good beer, and I prefer bottles.

bigger city, more peeps, bigger ngihtlife, its probally not, but i dont actually buy beer so i dont know haha.

also i read somewhere that keystone and natty light are rebadged coors/bud. it gets rebadged because its slightly off tase, or a dented can or some minor flaw like that.


i think its 20-25 for a 30 of coors around here

i drink bottles when i am planning on drinking for a while, however after work or skiing i stop and get a 24 ounce can of budweiser, just enough if you dont feel like drinking much. Also if im low on funds its miller light/budweiser if i have a few extra bucks its usually heineken or corona sometimes warsteiner dunkel or amberboch is good.  basically i think it would be a good move to offer more than 6/12/24 packs, also do  22/24oz bottles/cans and dont stick to one type of beer

Depends on the occasion.  What’s your demographic?  Anywho, around 12 for a case of Natty and ehhhhh about 9 for a six of good ‘uns.

Lager

Again, depends on what you’re drinking.  Not really, though.  Lime beers are ok.

See number 2… but I prefer drinking from a bottle as most do.

Cheap, as long as it’s bearable.

If you really are serious you better figure out your demographic because that’s probably going to be the key to all of the answers to 1-6.  nothing like a classic lager with decent taste and reasonable price to appeal to everybody.

thanks NS for all your quick input its truly helped us gain a broader view on what others like, other than just us three that are trying to get this going.

so to answer some questions and give a little more info about us:

3 college kids (2 majoring in comm and one undecided) who have no idea what we would like to do out of college. so we decided "hey we like to drink, we got to school, (the BEST market to get your information and feedback from) lets start a beer company"

so we have been tossing the idea around for a little and trying out new beers to see what we like and dont like. so far its going well and we are gaining useful knowledge and skills along the way.

currently we are in the brainstorming stage, no product testing or anything just yet. currently we are thinking about first starting out over the summer with cider beer (cheaper and easier to make) and move from there to beer once we have got some time brewing under our belt.

currently our demographic is the older college student to early 20's-30's, the way we look at it we would like our beer to grow with these people just as Bud and Miller have with our parents. but generally targeted to the younger market.

as of now we have to name, flavor ideas or even any clue how to first start this up we are just going to see how it plays out. again this is where your suggestions really help us out we want to produce a beer that everyone can enjoy.


so again NS please let us know what you like, and if you feel you have any ideas for a name or a beer you would like produced PLEASE let us know.

no we have never brewed our own beer, but everyone has to start somewhere, no? so why not now.

yes it will be confusing, yes there will be bad batches, yes we will be broke, yes we are prepared and excited for the ups-and-downs of beginning a new experience.

1. A good wheat beer, and I actually really enjoy Russ'n, its gotta be like 75% beer though. (its a german thing, more Bavarian thing with wheat beer actually, its mixed with coke.....sounds wierd, but its good)

2. Depends, I'd go with like 7-10 bucks for a 6 pack of good beer, but rather be able to get a whole case for cheaper. Or you could just make some really cheap OK beer and I would buy it for parties and stuff

3. beers I like. Fat tire, sierra nevada, pyramid hefeweizen etc.

7. mediocre cheap beer has to be a lot better then the really cheap beer, or people will just buy the shitty cheap beer. Make a good beer, with like flavors, something different people will probably buy it. Also maybe look into some of the stuff they sell in germany, there not really to get drunk, but like hiking, chillin on teh beach or something where you don't want to get drunk. Radler, Russ'n etc. Don't really see that stuff in the US, people might like it.

ive definatley had both spent 4.5 years in missoula goin to school best beer is cold smoke by kettlehouse. Kettlehouse is by far the best microbrewery in my opinion their beers are amazing

coming from somebody who has been around a lot of beer brewing, this is pretty damn unrealistic.

you have a lot to learn before you can start "adding flavors" that people tell you they like.

buy your equipment and start experimenting....chill on the business venture for awhile.

i had this stuff called linenkugels (sp?) creamy dark when i was in milwaukee and it was good if thats was you mean

just make a beer that you can compare to miller lite bud light coors light etc for around the same price and you'll be in business
