US v CANADA

I've got to write a comparison paper about any part of Canadian culture that compares with the US. I had an idea, but I don't have 5 pages of material for it. ( BC regulations, rescue policy, and avalanche policy)

weed policy
health care
legislative process

are played, give me something better

I mainly posted on NS to get some Canadian's ideas...

You should talk about the different geographic and economic views of guys Like Innis and Lipset. There's a whole argument between the opposing factions, some people feel that north south geographic similarities between canada and the us make it more practical for canadian annexation. Canada, east to west, is separated by daunting geographical features. The provinces are so disjointed. For example, the canadian maritmes are sealed off from the St. Lawrence valled by the appalachian mountains. The St. Lawrence is sealed off from the great plains by the canadian shield, and the great plains are shielded from the resource rich northwest by the rockies. If you look at a map, you will see that geography is laid out north - south. The rockies extend into America, the great plains in canada extend into the great plains in the US, the Great lakes connect the st. lawrence valley to the US, and the appalachians go down into the US. Historically, the canadian Maritimes have more in common with new england than with the rest of canada. They have the atlantic ocean in common- fishing, son. Really cool debate though.

weed policy is probably the least intellectual and pertinent thing you could write about. Any teacher worth their salt would fail you for giving precedent to that. There is a wealth of Canadian-American historical relationships that you could tap before copping out with a poor excuse for a subject like weed policy.

It's possible to write a 5 page paper on almost anything if you tried to find information on it.

You could compare the effects/results NAFTA has for both countries.

US presidential v Candian PM ellections.

In America we like to take years and spend millions of dollars on worthless campaign ads. In Canada its a few month process and much more to the point. Had a random conversation with a Canadian about this on a ski lift.

actually I go to school where 25% of the student body smokes and weed is pretty accepted. Too many kids will write about weed, and it is not an non-intellectual topic, it can be approached with a mature, detached POV. I have teachers who smoke here, it's nothing to look down on at wwu.

Actually canada is doing amazingly well at hockey, and you can't say we have only one sport, we have lacrosse too aaaaaand..........curling......

I dont know if Canada rules in Hockey. Most teams are in the U.S., and the U.S. teams are usually better.

as individual cities were not very good, but when we play as a country i.e. olympics, we own
because like half of all good hockey players come from canada, considering at least 3 quarters of the population played it when they were kids, its guaranteed were gonna have the best players pretty much

You could talk about the Reciprocity agreements of the mid-1800's and how they influenced north-south trade as well as how they influenced canadian confederation.


If not that, then just write about how much Canada owns at hockey

Yeah, because professional teams only use players from where they are located. By your logic, at points in the past decade, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and California would have been the premier hockey states in the US, Canadians make up around 50% of all the players in the NHL. There's no question that Canada is the dominant country in the NHL.

 Just look at the Olympics and World Juniors for even more of an indication of Canada's dominance in hockey.

Now that I think about it, you could probably easily write a 5 page paper on the differences in hockey between the US and Canada. Attitude towards the game, views on player development, impact on culture, etc, etc.

it all has to do with audience if the NHL was based in Canada there are only 31,000,000 possible viewers, in the US there are over 200,000,000 people, a much bigger audience.

also if you look at the stanley cup final from a few years ago between Ottawa and Anahiem, there wer more canadians playing for the Ducks than there wer playing for the Senators. most of the NHL is comprised of Canadians

Uhh... they have the most gold medals out of anyone in ice hockey with 9 out of 24 golds (20 mens and 4 womens). They also have 16 medals total out of a possible 24. So they win 37.5% of the time and medal 67% of the time. You were just a little off...

Freedom of speech. Hate speech is a crime here (criminal code s.319), whereas there you can't legislate on the content of speech, which is really dumb from where I stand, 'cause... fuck the bigots. On the flip side, pornography is given more or less free reign down there while up here we have a crime preventing certain kinds of indecency in that area (cc s.163 I think), which is sort of bullshit if you ask me, cause... whatever floats your boat. Easy to write about, and contentious.
