yeah it's cool how you could keep the thumbnail but leave the space for every video smaller, it was too big on the first beta version, and the big yellow stars weren't too nice either.. hope I'm making myself clear...

New design seems pretty good to me, although the player itself is giving me issues even playing a video

That;s probably an issue on my end though.

just a thought...if you cant embed videos in the video section, then people are just going to start lots of threads with link to vimeo etc...

You also aren't able to embed vimeo onto youtube and NS vids onto vimeo. Each site wants you to use their stuff exclusively for a number of reasons, and NS is no different.

Well really the plan is that by the time we stop allowing vimeo vids, our video system will be of a quality thats comparable to them. So you won't give all of your business to vimeo, you will be keeping it at newschoolers.com

I mean really, they have us beat for quality, which we'll just work our nuts off to catch up and offer you guys the same thing.

^^Do you think they give a rats ass about you? If we can get everyone hosting their vids at newschoolers, we can use it to progress the sport, and the way that skiing media is distributed. Hell there's no limit to how far we can go if we can offer you a product that you're stoked to use.

Okay if you guys can make it work and make it run as well as the old video section I'm down.
For some constructive criticism, whenever I click back to the video section after I've pulled down a window (such as average rating) it says "Page timed out"
I don't know why it does that, but if you do fix it! Maybe it's just internet explorer for all I know.

i like the best of both worlds thing going on, the less scrolling and navigating around i have to do the better.  And as far as not allowing and embedded videos, what about all the videos from vimeo, etc that are already up on here hosted from vimeo? what about in the forums? we wont be able to post random clips and stuff ppl find? im not sure where you are going with this.

The update on the new one is way better than when it first came out. I like the smaller thumbnails and no huge ass gold stars. You guys are definitely working hard to make everyone like the new one.

I think the end result of all of this is that there won't be any outside videos streamed through the forums / site anywhere... instead you'll have to stream them through NS, which is good for two reasons. First we have ad presence on everything and that means we don't need to put an ad before every 30 second clip someone wants to show to get to where we need to be in that department (already doing away with that). Second, money goes back into skiing instead of into... er, more carribean business trips for executive officers of LiveCorp? It has its downsides but overall it's necessary.

The idea is that any video in the video section is uploaded directly to NS, where before you had the ability to link in videos from other sources. This allows us to keep all the video traffic local, which means more views, and ad revenue, as well it means that whenever you embed your video somewhere else on the web you are proudly displaying the NS logo.

You will still be able to embed outside videos into threads just like before

As far as I know it is a "this point forward..." type thing so you will just lose the option to upload, I don't think we intend to purge the system, will try and double check for you though

We'll support all the videos previously added, just will stop allowing it to be added moving forwards.

And in terms of threads, blogs, and everywhere else except the video gallery, you're going to be more than welcome to put videos from wherever you want up.

Hopefully by this time all your vids will be on NS because our video system will pwn.

When videos are posted on other websites such as freeskier, transworld, skipass, skifilm.no, and even competition edits like JOSS, superunknown etc - sometimes it wouldn't be possible to have the creator of the film upload it to NS, so without having the ability to embed foreign video, wouldn't it essentially redirect traffic away from NS to another site, rather than just viewing a single video from a foreign host, but keeping the traffic here?

It probably isn't the best to use examples such as freeskier etc who are essentially friends and here for the same reason, but does any of that make sense?

^ Yeah that is the one problem I can see. For example, one of the top rated videos right now is Mike Hornbeck's EXPN video. I'm sure that ESPN wants that to stay on their site, and they obviously won't upload it directly to NS.

What would we be able to do with a situation like that? We don't want a bunch of threads saying "Watch this video!!!"

You can... in the new video section you can rank by rating. As well you can go to:

www.newschoolers.tv

That will take you to the NSTV page which is made up of current top rated videos.

This is definitely a difficult situation. We thought long and hard about this, but I don't think that the small percentage of time that this is the case will outweigh the massive amounts of views that go to other people's vids.

If we could somehow exclude 99% of the other services, and only allow the occasional ESPN vid, that would be great. But we can't... its one or the other.

In the long run, if people really want their videos in the NS video section, they will have to upload it directly. If they have something super sick on another site, they will have to upload in a blog, forum or get it in a news article.

Yeah definitely a difficult situation. Would the mods be annoyed if we uploaded a video that was just the title card of, say, the ESPN video and then put the link to it in the description or the comments? Or would that get deleted? It's really nice to have all those videos in the video section, and that's where it will get seen by the most people. NSers are always annoyed with the "watch this video" threads, and I'm worried it might get out of control.

Whatever you guys figure out will work I'm sure, and I know you have a difficult situation but I'm just trying to explore options. Thanks for all you're doing!

i hope no one mentioned this cause i dont wanna look like an idiot who cant read... but does the new video section automatically convert the videos to a predetermined format? or do they stay in the original format like they used to?

My biggest problem with the new video section is the Top Rated Section.
No longer are videos with hundreds and thousands of ratings that have remained rated a 9 point whatever on the top rated

Any movie with a few 10 ratings makes it to the top, and it just keeps going like that with new videos
When more people watch them, sure the rating lowers, but there are more videos with a few 10 ratings on top rated

I want to see movies that have withstood hundreds of critiques on the top rated

YES i was just about to post the exact thing.  Current system does not work.  It needs to balance number of ratings alongside ratings to get an accurate rating.  Right now it is just cluttered with videos that have like twenty 10 ratings.  Definitely needs to be fixed...

Sorry... just want to make sure everyone finds the old-style top rated section.    Changing the "Order" allows you to also search by various ways, but it isn't the top rated section.

Shit is really getting better. Good work doug/paul/ns mods. I like how the ads aren't as prominent and how its starting to look cleaner! I love it. Good work guys
