Driving Stick

Alright, sorry if there is a thread on this already, i searched

ok, so i got my permit in late january. I have basically mastered an automatic car, of course there are little things i still need to learn.

so today my dad took me to try driving stick. We have 5 cars (4 drivers plus me). only one is an automatic.  Basically my whole family drives stick, both my brothers do for sure, my mom and dad sometimes drive the automatic. So i want/have to learn stick

so i went out today, and i did alright. So i know idiots that can drive stick and im no idiot, so im not so discourged yet, but i did fuck up a lot.

Getting into 1st is the worst, i come off the clutch to fast, don't give it enough gas as i do, but then i think how in the world would i do this on a hill or in traffic. getting into 2nd, 3rd, what ever is easy (although i don't put the clutch all the way down which i should do). also, like while driving i dont feel like i do things quick enough, i mean i know this all comes with time and practice, but i feel like its overwhelming

you guys have any tips? anything to keep my chin up about it, anything to help out? my dads a great driver but hes impatient so its kinda hard to learn with him

It's called a heel toe...It used to be hard, but it's pretty easy since I got my Momo pedals in.

Transmissions are hard to fuck up...Maybe if you're jumping the starts a lot you could hurt it (more likely your engine mounts), or if you miss a shift...god that kills it. Or if you try to shift without the clutch altogether...which I wouldn't recommend.

For a basic clutch, I think they're a couple hundred...and they take a while to burn if you're using it properly.

go practice on a dirt bike or a four wheeler that has clutch. i think once you understand the concept of how clutch works it will come naturally, it least that helped for me. ive had my clutch dirtbike for about a year and got good with using that, and i just got my permit in october and my dad took me out to drive stick and i got it right away.

no. i learned how to do this on a 89 corolla, and that didnt even have power windows, let alone a chip smart enough to give the car gas.

just let the clutch out really slowly and smoothly and you dont have to use the gas to get going.

if no one understands, i'll post a video tomorrow showing you guys what the hell i mean

Once you get real used to releasing your clutch to the point where the car begins to move, you should be able to do everything else a lot more smoothly.  From there its just what you learn on your own.

yeah, mine's still pretty easy with my stock pedals in

just make sure you dont have large shoes on and you're set (for the heel toe)

practice and practise are both correct spellings... practice is a verb and practice is the noun...

it just takes a little getting used to.. my car is a stick and i was really discouraged at first as well. mainly cuz my dad would flip shit every time it died on me

So true.  I just had to replace my clutch and I swear it's because of the biddies I've taught to drive stick in my car over the years. 

Definitely not worth it in retrospect

you guys are crazy. no girlfriend of mine shall ever drive my car unless for some reason i get drunk and cant drive it and she is the only one available to do so. and she must know how to drive standard. im not trying to teach her while im drunk...

Once I told my girlfriend to pull my car out of the driveway without me.

I hear my engine revving loudly from inside the house, so I peer my head out to see what the f*ck was going on.

I see a large cloud of smoke emitting from under the car (clutch = burn baby burn!)...

Almost had to introduce her to Mr. Backhand.

Yeah man, you'll get it. Its just a matter of getting the feel for how much gas you need to give it, and how the clutch pedal feels, everyone sucks at first.

practice on a gravel road.

that way you wont burn up your tires and its a lot more forgiving as a road surface.
thats how i learned and it made it so so much easier.

My bro made me start and stop in 1st gear like fifty times before he'd even let me attempt to change gears. Also find a parking lot with a hill to try multiple hill starts.

WOOOOOOOT!!!!!!!!

so my dad took my out today to a better parking lot, a really big one with lots of room. i really figured out the clutch, how you ease off till you start moving, then you have to really ease off slow and smooth off the clutch. WOOT!

then my dad said wanna drive home? i said sure, and stalled right at the stop sign leaving the parking lot (fail), so he says hmm... i better do this. So he drives it out of town and up a pretty tough hill where you need to stop and all that. then he stops at another street and i get in and drive home! '

so second time, i made a huge improvment. Im sooooo much more optamistic about driving stick now, although i have the very bear basics down, and im not even close to good. down shifting, coming off the clutch fasst enough, all the really little things but the things that bring it all together. Like my dad made me park, i pulling into the space and stopped and stalled, i forgot to put it into neutral, haha

i drive my dad beamer and its stick and im 15 ... so its not anything of age .... try practicing on a semi autmatic 4 wheeler so u get the hang of shifting .. then u can ad the clutch in later

haha double claim...if you want to start getting into that shit then let your gramps tell you some stories.

my mom used to drive a 3 on the tree down to the liquor store at 11 years of age to buy her dad cigarettes and beer. yes by herself. haha.

nothing can compare to middle america a few decades or more ago. the shit that went down with farm boys will never be replicated by us pussys of this generation

i learned to drive stik through dirtbikes and quads, but honestly just drive it for a week straight and you will get the hang of it, its just repetiotion until you begin to get the feel for your car and its RPM's.

dont drive stick on and off especially in the beginning i feel like you lose alot of your skill only doing it every other week. go for a week straight like i said.

oh and i too think its one of the sexiest things if a girl can drive stick.

I learned how to ride dirtbikes and quads on the track at my house like 3 years before I could even try to start driving a car. But when I did, my parents still gripped the side of the car for dear life becuase they were so scared. 

Once they were confident I could handle a honda, my daddy let me start whipping his porche around. I love that car

brake+clutch

brake+begin to slowly release cutch

release brake + gently give it some gas + while the clutch engages

its all about timing

if your on a huge hill , you can put your e brake on , put the car in gear and start the relase and gas so you dont roll back really far. ding ding

Practice is the only thing you can do. Believe me, once you get a week of driving stick under your belt, things will start falling into place and it will become natural to you. Just remember that you don't need to dump the clutch off right away to start the car, rev to 2K, let go of the clutch slowly, if you feel it start to stall, push the clutch in right away and try again. Hell, you don't even need to rev, if you're on relatively flat ground you can just slowly let off the clutch with no gas to get the car going. Practice and soon you'll never want to drive an automatic again.

so i've been progressing, haha. and i was driving into the next town with my brother, and we were in his shitty 1992 318i. so i was driving with him for the first time and there was kinda traffic, and i stalled. so i go to start the car again, but his peice of shit doest start unless you rev the engine. so hes yelling at me to rev it because i cant start it, but then im rolling back. so i put on the e brake and try it and i thought it worked but it didnt, so i have to do it again. and were in the middle of traffic and my brothers flipping out and the other cars are being assholes. It was very nerve racking.

so the only thing i hate about stick is stalling, haha. makes me feel like an idiot, and then i also feel so much pressure to get back going again.

Theres one of your main problems, is the car youre practicing with. It has a tighter clutch which makes it a little harder to feel for that 1st gear shift. I have the same problem learning with my dads BMW Z3...

but keep practicing. All i do is just practice going up and down the driveway with it, trying to get into 1st and all that. Practice makes perfect.
