hey, im puttin 2 in diamter legs on a 2-in diameter steel rail, i was wondering, since the weld probably wouldnt hold if i did it flat, should i cut a groove in the top of the legs for the rail to sit in? Would it be better to cut a V shape or a U shape? What is the best method of cutting a groove in it (ie. hacksaw, dremel, etc)? Im just wonderin how to make this rail the strogest i can so any help would be helpful...

if your a good welder and theres no slag in the weld, then there should be a problem

what do u mean u shape or v shape. You want the most surface area on the weld. the more welded area the stronger the rail will be. So you need to cut it into the shape of the tubing or whatever you are useing for the rail.

yeah, i figured i'd have to cut a curved chunk out of them to give it the most surface area but i am a slacker and a U seems harder that a V. I was just tryin to see if there were any secrets or tricks to makin them or whatever. So whats the best way to cut the curve out of the rail?

use a hack saw, then file it down some to make it all nice.

Well if you are using 2 in diameter legs, and 2 in diameter rail, its not going to have a u shape, it will be shallow u, wider than normal. If you went with 3 in diam. tubing you would be able to have a U shaped cut where the top rail could slide a little into, and then you could weld giving you the maximum surface area. However if all you have is the 2 in tubing, then a curve at the top is the best you can do to get the most surface area and have the most strength in the weld. Hope this helps. Ride On.
