No Poles has gone too far

I've been noticing a worrying trend lately at my home mountain. Most serious park skiers at Stevens Pass, WA go without poles. I guess the general public has taken notice, because when I was freeriding today, I went by a six year old, and guess what, NO POLES. Absolute beginner too.

I come home today, and did a little research before making some sort of stupid thread, and guess what I found - ITS SPREADING. There are hundreds of pictures out there on google of  "My first time skiing" and VERY few have poles in hand. Proof:

Little does this little one know that they are weighing in on one of the great debates of freesking.

The implications of an entire generation of new skiers riding without poles is staggering. Thats not the worst of it however. Apparently, at some places they actually TEACH PEOPLE TO SKI WITHOUT POLES.

Look, I take neither side in this debate. I know no poles has been hated on for a while, but really? Swaying the ski culture by brainwashing children? Thats a massive step over the line for me. For the love of God, THEY'RE ONLY CHILDREN. WHY DID YOU ASSHOLES GET THEM INVOLVED!?!

So I broke one of my poles last weekend, and decided to stay off the poles for the morning so as not have to deal with the rental shop douchebags. Kidding, I get a hardon around rental shop people.

Heres what I observed: Balance is a lot harder. I cant do jump turns nearly easy enough without poles. What should happen if this new crop of no-pole skiers hit some seriously gnar terrain? I mean the Warren Miller difficult shit, where you need to hop turn just to avoid the cliffs and shit. The new skiers arent simply going to be able to suddenly pick up poles and learn this shit. Also, think about the Candide style pole plant tricks. Are we to see these suddenly die out as nobody rocks the poles to stomp these rediculous airs? Look at how much goodness was gleaned from the usage of poles:

i dont think you realize that they usually teach kids to ski without poles because they usually flail their arms and could hit people or try and stick the poles in the ground to stop and occasionally catch a pole in the stomach.

when peoplre are fitrst leasrning the instructers usually take away the poles and than reintroduce them once they become better skiers

All I can do is hope that someday my future children will learn how to ski with poles so when they are older and ski on their own, they'll be as steezy as this guy.  My kids WILL use poles.

Just tragic.  There are no other words.  This innoncent youngster is attempting a complex arial maneuver, but looks like he may return to the earth upside down.  Ditching the poles does not grant the skier invincibility.  Another wannabe T-wall ends in paralysis.  Just tragic.

i dont see anything wrong with little kids having no poles. they're pizza skiing their way down. poles wouldnt help. plus no poleing is fun some days. except for the last day of skiing i had. damn was it icy.

little kids have never had poles i skied with no poles untill i was 8
but i do think it has gone too far in the freeriding area
it just feels unnatural to me and looks funny

i am a ski instructor. We are encouraged to discourage poles for the kiddies. Builds balance, much easier

yaa im pretty shur that almost 90% of young rippers start out without poles just because its 1 less thing to worry about...ive noticed it at stevens also though i tryed it in the park and didnt have as good of a run

I can't stand watching a good skier throwing away his/her talent by not using poles.  However, I teach at a local hill and for young kids to learn how to ski is way easier without poles.  when they use poles at too young of an age they dont know what to do with them, usually trip over them, and get into bad habits.  Once their skiing develops than you introduce them to the concept of poles.  By all means though, when you are a developed skier and not using poles, give me a break.  It's like throwing all your talent down the drain.

I learnt to ski without poles, and so did everyone that i know.  they do that so that the kids dont stab themselves when they fall.  Now I use poles, except occasionally in the park because its easier to grab.  But the kids aren't weighing in in a controversial subject, their instructors just dont have them use poles.  but in any case, WHAT DOES IN MATTER?

Yes Rowen, I concur. Even I as a youngster did not use poles. It really is a tragedy. Also, gangster hand motions and guns were used in my promos I made at a very young age (seen in the picture below) It looks as if I am "shooting the place up" with my 9mm. It really is a shame.
