I've been noticing a worrying trend lately at my home mountain. Most serious park skiers at Stevens Pass, WA go without poles. I guess the general public has taken notice, because when I was freeriding today, I went by a six year old, and guess what, NO POLES. Absolute beginner too.

I come home today, and did a little research before making some sort of stupid thread, and guess what I found - ITS SPREADING. There are hundreds of pictures out there on google of "My first time skiing" and VERY few have poles in hand. Proof:

Mini Ripper, following in the footsteps of Pep, Andy and Eric.

Little does this little one know that they are weighing in on one of the great debates of freesking.

The implications of an entire generation of new skiers riding without poles is staggering. Thats not the worst of it however. Apparently, at some places they actually TEACH PEOPLE TO SKI WITHOUT POLES.

Get these children some aluminum, baskets and grips, pronto.

Look, I take neither side in this debate. I know no poles has been hated on for a while, but really? Swaying the ski culture by brainwashing children? Thats a massive step over the line for me. For the love of God, THEY'RE ONLY CHILDREN. WHY DID YOU ASSHOLES GET THEM INVOLVED!?!

I was riding up the park chair with one of my mighty mites, who was 4, and he saw someone ridin no poles and he thought he was another mighty mite, it cracked me up and I wold him that he must have been.

Well young begginners with no poles probally has little to do with park riders w/o poles and more to do with instructors starting them out like that.

With a group of begginers we (instructors) generally dont like them poking each other eyes out so we dont let them use poles... this carries over into them freeskiing w/o poles.

yo im a ski instructor and we dont teach kids to ski with poles until they can ski most of the mountain, cuz if they learn from a young age then they are too dependent on the poles for balance and will be screwed from then on.

as an instructor we teach kids not to use poles cuz using poles when you strt teaches kids to rely on them to turn stop and climb. as a result they dont learn how to ski properly and hurt temselves. besides no poles is way steezier

I think you're wrong Rowen. Beginners are actually supposed to learn without poles because instructors are supposed to teach them that way.
