Religulous

No Catholicism is a branch of Christianity and I was just making the point that a major leader of a major branch of Christianity thinks one way.

Jesus Christ!(sort-of pun intended) i consider myself atheist and that is the dumbest fucking post i have ever seen. I know it's from the last page and cottonwhatever already responded to it, but i just couldn't let it go.

While I am here, Cotton~whatever b-rent or anyone, What is your response to the simple fact that the story of Jesus is very similar to, and at times blatantly copies, religious beliefs and myths that came before christianity?

Give me some properly-sourced examples.  And I swear to the God you don't believe in, if you cite the Zeitgeist movie, I will find a way to smack you through the Internet.

ok, dont get your panties all up in a bunch.  but look at the similarities of the big three..  they all believe in the story of Abraham (the bitch that was going to kill his son)...  many of their stories are the same.  the only difference is the prophet they follow and the name of their God.  Islam has Allah and Muhammad.  the Christians have God and Moses (which the Jews also have).....

its a little fucked up that these three have fought such crazy wars with each other and yet believe almost the same stories.....  that can be denied.

That's a good point, but it's not really a coincidence, it just points out that the three religions have some common roots.  The key difference between them is how they view Jesus: Muslims believe Jesus was a prophet, Jews believe Jesus was an apostate, and Christians believe Jesus was the Son of God.  That's where they conflict.  It should probably be pointed out, though, that many of the problems between the three are somewhat modern - Jews and Muslims lived mostly in peace until they came into conflict over Palestine after World War I (and especially after World War II).  Tensions between Christians and Muslims probably started mainly with the Crusades, but they haven't really been continuous since then.  The Cold War really exploited the differences between the religions and aggravated the situation in the Middle East.

You pretty much just disregarded everything you said earlier in the thread. What your saying it's not the fault of religion, but one's interpretation of the religion and misguided fervor. Which I agree with.

interesting book for someone to look into.  The Last Templar is really entertaining, and brings up some interesting points in terms of mostly the Catholic church.

oh definitely. i agree with this.
most ppl  who have their shit remotely together take part in some form of religious  regime. i for one, am not an active member of any organized religion...however... i have my own rules, set of values and morals that i follow in order to maintain my integrity and stay true to who i believe i am at this point in my life. my "religion" may adapt to who i am down the road, and so on. for example there are morals i have now that I did not have a few years ago...and i acquired such values by doing things that I was not so proud of..things that i felt weren't a true reflection of who i am and what i want to be. i dont consciously decide what these 'rules' are at all. i mainly react to situations or make decisions based on what i feel is part of my true self and not my 'ego' self.

for some people, religion isn't like this...for some it's about worship, faith, etc. and others have a more "practical" form of religion in their lives.
