lebron james will be the only one to even threaten the throne. Kobe is a lock for top 5 all time, but i couldnt say with a straight face regardless of what he does in the next 6 to 7 years that he's on the same level as MJ.

kobe is legit and he is the man he is deadly from all around the court and yes he is peaking and i believe the next two - three years he will continue to peak...but i don't believe he can de throne mj...mj is and was the man (i mean have you ever watched spacejam? hahah jk) mj dominated the sport of basketball i would call mj the greatest athelete of all time...the only other person i would say that has dominated a sport like mj is tiger woods....kobe will be in the top five...and so will lebron...but it still will be hard for them to take down michael jordan.

and bryant doesnt really give a shit about numbers. when he does care he puts up an 80 point game or a 61 point game to break the all time scoring record at madison square garden. Kobe is a straight up animal. Jordan is too but kobe has more upps and is more athletic that cant be argued

i'm a fairly big basketball fan and while i can say that kobe will be one of the top players of all time he ain't gonna threaten MJ.

as for LeBron James....well i can't say it any better than Bill Simmons.  copied and pasted from Page 2 of ESPN the magazine....

Last February, I wrote that he didn't have a ceiling. This year? I figured out his ceiling. At least for right now. At age 24, he's a cross between ABA Dr. J (unstoppable in the open court, breathtaking in traffic, has the rare ability to galvanize teammates and crowds with one "Wow" play, even handles himself as well off the court) and 1992 Scottie Pippen (the freaky athletic ability on both ends, especially when he's cutting pass lines or flying in from the weak side for a block), with a little MJ (his overcompetitiveness and sense of The Moment), Magic (the unselfishness, which isn't where I thought it would be back in 2003, but at least it's in there a little) and Bo Jackson (how he can occasionally just overpower the other team in a way that doesn't seem human) mixed in ... only if all of that Molotov Superstar Cocktail was mixed together in Karl Malone's body. This is crazy. This is insane. This is unlike anything we've ever seen. And to think, LeBron doesn't even have a reliable 20-footer or a post-up game yet. See, this is only going to get better. And it's already historic.

As a Celtics fan, I shudder for the future. As an NBA fan, I am pinching myself.

I am so tired of this, everyone needs to just get off Kobe. He is a GREAT player, but there are major differences between him and Jordan. They are both great players but are from different times where the game is played differently. Teams barley play defense if they play any at all. Last years Celtics were the first team that actually played some sort of defense; and they shut Kobe down. Jordan had to play against those defenses all the time and he still managed to put up the numbers he did.

Again Ill say it, Kobe is a great player just not better than Jordan.

Oh i watch his games and every game I am amazed at what he puts up and what he does, I was actually rooting for him to beat the Celtics in the playoffs last year (thats how much I hate all of Boston). But I grew up watching Michael Jordan as if he was some basketball god and now seeing people compare someone who is not similar to him can just get annoying.

Jordan is the shit but he also had a really good supporting cast with him. Pippen, Longley, Kukoc, Kerr, and Rodman just to name a few. All of those guys are great teammates. Kobe also has great teammates, Gasol, Fisher, Bynum. Jordan is a better player than Kobe and I believe that James is better than Kobe (not now but in a few years James will be owning). Time will tell but by then there will be a new superstar in the league that we are comparing to Jordan, it just keeps going.

Not only that, being a better athlete than someone does not mean you are better then them at a sport. For example you could argue that Tiger Woods is the best golfer because he is the most athletic. Thats not true at all, he is the best because he dominates at every part of them game and puts the most work in.

And the way I look at it same goes for this Kobe may (just maybe) is a better athlete than Michael Jordan but he is not or will not be a better basketball player.

Just because a person has a 50 point game or a 61 point game or even an 80 point doesnt justify that they are a better player. Just like in any other sport just because you have a couple amazing performances that doesnt mean you are the best player.

Are any of the kids in this thread comparing Jordan to Kobe actually old enough to have seen Jordan play and were not like 7 years old at the time?

Its probably good for you guys to stat crunch since thats the only evidence available as I sincerely doubt any of you were old enough to actually appreciate that way MJ played when he was in his prime.
