Skicross

yes, i searchbarred, but they were all lousy threads.
I want to know what NS's opinion on skicross is. what do you guys think of it, do you enjoy watching it, would you like to compete in it, do you hate it, do you love it, etc. Basically everything you think of it, maybe what you think of it being in the Olympics, whether it could be considered freestyle, etc.

personally, i think it's fucking awesome, and it will be one of the only events worth watching in 2010. At this point in my life, i can't see myself picking it up, but i do enjoy watching the competitions. agree or disagree, let me know, i'm curious.

I think its awsome, and would love to race on the courses, not necessarily competitively, but with friends and stuff.....well maybe competitively to. lol.

would make it more interesting to add different features and they should allow a bit more pushing and shoving, just for the entertainment value

interesting fact: the athletes are allowed to wear whatever they want, ski whatever kind of skis they want, etc.
which basically means that any of us newschoolers could enter competition in our newschool gear. yet another plus. i'm beginning to change my mind about picking it up now haha.

I don't like it. Just my preference. I don't mean to make anyone who enjoys it feel bad about it.

Personally, I don't care for any race sport, skiing, NASCAR, motocross, whatever. Racing is boring to me. And if I want to see wrecks, I can watch them on YouTube.

And now for my skicross rant. Skicross, to me, is worse than most race sports. I feel like it's FIS attempting to be cool and hip... and failing miserably by not changing the things that really suck about racing. In spite of the loose rules, those people that dominate the sport are going to wear race skis that were painstakingly tuned and the tightest pants they can get away with. For every cool person in it, like Errol Kerr, there are ten washed up racer douches like Casey Puckett and Stan Hayer. It's repackaged racing, same douches, same stupid racer attitude.

I'm afraid skicross contributed to ski superpipe not being in the olympics. FIS was headed to irrelevance and rather than admit racing is on its way out, they half-assed it and pushed racing-lite for people who like crashes.

But seeing how FIS is screwing up snowboard halfpipe, maybe skiing is better off staying out of the olympics. http://snowboarding.transworld.net/2009/02/16/the-2010-olympics-test-event-goes-poorly/

Sparknotes: Go fast and go over rollers all you want. Keep skicross off primetime tv.

how about skicross outside of the olympics? i mean, the olympics are generally a pretty small part of skicross right now, in fact, there's talking of it being taken out of the olympics. the FIS doesn't want anything to do with skicross really.

If it makes you happy, great. Doesn't bother me. It's not what I want to do when I'm on the mountain. When it gets elevated to the Olympics or Primetime TV, it's just a new way for washed up racers to continue their careers--and people to get their rocks off by watching crashes. And it brings all that baggage with it.

I went to Nationals for skicross at Northstar some years back. All the kids I was competing against had speed suits and race skis on, and I had an XXL Obermeyer one-piece and foreword-mounted Fujatives with dulled edges. Haha I looked like such a goon. Especially from behind as I passed all them bitches unce unce unce

just an FYI, skicross has been around much longer than FIS has had control of it. just a question, what is it that really sucks about racing? is it because it's incredibly competitve or is it because racing produces some of the best all round skiers out there? so what if those that dominate the sport wear race skis? there's nothing stopping skiers from slapping on the race boards and going fast.

why would you think skicross kept pipe skiing out of the olympics? FIS could have chosen to put pipe skiing into the olympics but chose not to. there are probably several reasons behind it (ie. complete domination by the US and Canada) while skicross is more spread out with top performers coming out of everywhere from France, Canada, Austria, US, etc... but above all, here is what would probably be the number one reason is the absolute lack of participation in FIS sanctioned halfpipe events by the world's top skiers. i will give credit to Xavier Bertoni and Matt Hayward (to name a few) for showing up on the results page more than just once (http://www.fis-ski.com) stop giving FIS shit for not pushing for pipe skiing to be added to the olympics, instead, look to the big guys in the sport to start participating in the tour and showing FIS executives that pipe deserves to be an olympic sport.

you attitude is exactly the same as the "racer douchebags" you're describing. before you pass judgement on skicross, put on a set of race skis and enter a race!

Skiercross is awesome to comepete in....but i can only watch it for a little at a time. Mt. Snow had a 3-4 race series in 02-03 when i was a junior and senior in high school. I used to drive up alone from pa and compete. they were some of the best weekeneds ever. They also had one a year at blue mountain in PA...then college happened.
There is nothing like going full speed down a course that's made the right way. you don't have to worry about speedchecking over jumps, just prejumping and then pumping when you land. it's the best feeling ever!

Skiercross is dope, so much fun to do once in a while. I had the opportunity to get on a skiercross team, and I seriously considered it but I decided against it because I like a more free version of what I do. I ski because I like to, I jump because its fun, not because I like to post a faster time than the next guy, which is equally sick and still super fun. You know what I mean?

As for FIS, they're the best organization of their kind and the judging will always need refinement, if you want perfect judging then go do aerials. I'd rather have FIS judge X-games big air than text-to-vote anyways. Something for you to think about.

skiercross looks awesome! i have never been on a real skierrcross course but i definitely plan to someday.. it is fun to watch too, some of the Xgames races sucked this year, way to slow and they were barely making it over the jumps...

skicross is wicked fun to do, i just did my first race at jay last saturday but crashed out wicked bad (forgot to pre-jump a roller) and now i'm hooked on racing it.

It looks fun as hell.  It's like a compilation of all the more fun parts of skiing.  I think it would be sick if they could put some rails in there without killing people.

I love skiercross. I think it is a great sport and it being in the Olympics a big step towards the validity of the sport.  It's getting it more media coverage and upping the Prizes.  I compete in skiercrosses like Europa Cup and Stuff and it is intense.  A big bonus is cash prizes the other day I did the Davos Swiss Open Cup came third and got 150 swiss francs. Not much but its better than  nothing. Its also good Sailing 30ft in the air touching people next to you is crazy, all my non skiing friends hate watching skiing but like to skiercross because it has speed, agility, jumps, big air and big crashes.  It's good to see in skiercross there actually isn't too much tight shit going on and the regulations say it has to be baggy (maybe no to NS standard of baggy) but still baggyish. It is actually a FIS sanctioned freestyle event and FIS don't won't to much to do with it, which is why the rules are pretty lax and it's not alpine.  In my mind its great because its just like what we used to do as  kids, race your friends down the run over nolls, jumps and bumps.  It's good being on a course going fast over jumps knowing it's safe, medically monitered and you can monitor your progress.

What's not to love? Ski cross is super fun, its like deciphering a new puzzle every time I get to a new course, trying to figure out how it'll run. You get going ridiculously fast with 3 other people over 100ft tables, gaps, step ups/downs and rollers. Check footage from the sun valley 48straight/ski tour or the last cypress world cup for what a real sx course looks like. They also have even prize money for men and women most of the time, and most of the pros don't wear spandex. It's like chinese downhill, but more fun.
