How to reduce size of video files

So i have an hd cam (vixia hf11) its my first one and i have a few simple vids i want to convert to a mpeg format or whatever and turn into a smaller filesize...
when I use the canon software it seems to have only 2 sizes available to convert to and the file size seems to be really large. Is there another software that i can use for editing and what not and to convert the file format the cam saves in
is there like a for dummies thread on filming, editing and saving?

For editing the best programs are Final Cut and Adobe Premiere, but those might be a little much for what you need. You can download Quicktime Pro and convert in that if you want.
Get an invite to the Movie Maker Crew cult, there's a ton of information in there.

well theres several ways of doing this. You could convert the file using some sort of converter you find off of google and convert it to mpeg or whatever you need or you can compress it, but if your going to compress it the quality will probably be pretty bad.

also so the software that came with the cam is what i was trying to use. no way to do it with this? there is hardly any documentation on the software itself
ill try downloading adobe premier and final cut... might need some quidance once here. Anyone can invite me to the filming and editing cult?
I am new to a cam and want to put out some edits eventually but i want to just work with what i got at first
