this is a rather unsophisticated thought that just popped up in my head but i think despite what public opinion says about the past 8 years and the bush administration, in retrospect, i think our foreign policy of premptive elimination sets obama up perfectly for a new 8 years of deterrence, education, rebuilding, and competition.
That is, after 9/11 we needed a dont fuck with us period where we fuck shit up even if everyone hates us. then after that, we can ask, " are you gonna behave now?" and be nicer. For every other country on the face of this planet is an adolescent child (some are younger) and america is that cool dad. Sometimes in the course of parenting, you endure your children's unfounded, shortsighted disrespect, but (hopefully) eventually there comes a time when things settle down, you can treat your kids like adults and talk it out.
