Virus in explorer.exe! How do I remove it???

My stepmom got her comp infected with all kinds of viruses and now I have to clean it up.  I booted into safe mode and installed Avast!, and did a boot scan.  It pops up saying that explorer.exe has a virus, but it obvoiusly can't be deletd or moved, because then Windows can't run.  This is the real explorer.exe, not a fake (its in the right directory).  How do I fix it?

its a trojan i think i had the same 1, i had to completely format the computer idk what else to do

if you can download MalwareBytes its free ware and gets rid of everything. chances are its the vundo virus itll find it

Find a folder in your computer called "system32". Its likely hidden very well, and you'll get all kinds of warnings, but ignore all that. Delete the entire contents, and the virus should stop causing you problems.

actually, the run file name for internet explorer is iexplore.exe, not explorer.exe, it's definitely a virus and can be deleted. but just verify what i told you is correct in case your mom modified some file names or something

Wrong.

I would not hesitate to delete anything named iexplore.exe, IE sucks.
expolere.exe handles the File Explorer, not Internet Explorer.  Without it, your computer can't do much of anything.

I can't get it off with Malwarebytes either.  I'll just tell her that she has to ues the laptop until her son can reinstall XP on it.

I've had my PC for 3, no viruses, rarely freezes (just getting slow, but it's old).

Don't run an antivirus, either.
