Who the fuck cares, why is everyone making such a big deal out of it.  He's the best swimmer, and he smoked a plant, that's all there is to it.  It's HIS PRIVATE FUCKING LIFE!!! I think it's bad that he did because he is in a role where he has to behave better than everyone else but i think it's good that people that are idolized are getting caught because maybe it will help show people that are so against it that it isn't that harmful and people can live productive lives while smoking it. I think the more people that are exposed smoking it, the closer Washington will come to talking about changing the laws pertaining to it.

I just think its gay as fuck that somebody went public with that. Anyone with a decent sense of logic knows that marijuana shouldn't be illegal, while it wasn't worth the consequences that resulted i can understand why someone as famous a phelps would want to party and relax like the rest of us. But for someone at the party to tarnish his career with such a dick move as releasing this picture for something as mundane and common as ripping a bong is just ridiculous, whoever did release it oughta have the shit kicked outta them, but thats just my opinion.

I doubt Phelps is an active user. I know lots of people that rarely smoke, but don't shy away from hitting it when they are at a party or something, and I think Phelps is the same.

But who knows? With his active lifestyle and inhuman metabolism, he could have used quite a bit, and could more easily pass tests.

no. it is possible to enjoy yourself without intoxicating your body. he is an icon and as cliche as it may sound, as an icon he has a responsibility. the day america promotes it's heroes for using illegal drugs is a day when we lose all sense of reason and morality. the media fries him and rightfully so.

I don't see how this is screwing up his career? Sure he might lose some sponsors, but he will just get new ones. I mean, there has got to be someone with a decent amount of money who wants to sponsor a guy that won 8 Golds in the olympics, right?

I think its a step towards marijuana becoming more socially acceptable, and closer towards a decriminalization. Mabye not Decrim, but definately shows people that Weed is out there and some of the most noticable and even athletes see the benefits of this magical herb

im not "proud" of phelps for smoking i mean watever hes in college its going to happen who gives a fuck but for hiim it was so dumb cuase of the way it is in society now and the way the media portrays it yes for the average person watever and for some people oh make it legel watever but in the end he fucked himself over and is ruining his career and tons of money. he cant just go and do that becuase people look up to him and he is a every day name now and has to make a good image

He has a responsibility to the companies who sponsor him, not to his fans. Parents should raise their own kids to know what's right or wrong, not let them learn by mimicking public figure. And who said he was being promoted for using weed? People simply said he should be left alone. He is being promoted for his athletic ability, not for being the target of some blasphemous scandal induced by the media.

Olympic medalists smoke pot all the time.  Danny Kass has 2 silver medals and hosts the 420 games every year.  The media is just trying to take down Phelps.

him smoking pot shouldn't change a damn thing.  It's not a performance enhancer and there are so many benefits to toking up.  Our stupid as government are the ones that created the "look down on people because they smoke weed" image and just because our government makes it illegal it doesn't mean that they're decision is justified.  It goes to show, you can still smoke and be the best athlete the Olympics has ever seen let alone every other athlete that smokes and can still be great at what they do for a living.

What if the drug in question shouldn't be illegal? What if it's illegal for stupid, outdated, and hypocritical reasons? What if the drug doesn't actually intoxicate your body because it's a plant?

Let me ask you this - if Phelps was feeling lonely and isolated because of his superstar status and went on antidepressants, would you say the same thing?

well thats a different question all together. Unfortunately for him and how people view him, marijuana is illegal, regardless of whether people think it should be or not.

I agree with you though about the antidepressants, its a very touchy subject. People will view it however they want.

And as for me, i'm no more proud of him than i was after the olympics. I could care less what he does with his body. Really, he has nowhere to go but down by doing anything to his body. (not saying pot will ruin him!) But rather that he is clearly at his atheletic prime, so if he does anything to destroy himself, its his own fault.

*again, no saying that that pot will destroy his swimming ability, i just mean overall. He can do whatever he pleases, it is his body, and if he can't win anymore because of his past decisions, at least it will be entirely his own fault

I am so sick of people trying to use the "role model" argument. I am all for kids looking up to him because they want to be the best swimmer in the world and the best athlete to ever compete in the Olympics, but that is all they should look to him for. Children should only have two role models. Their parents. If your kid has to look to a pro athlete or some celebrity for moral and life lessons then you as a parent have failed. Everyone needs to go watch the Lil Wayne interview with Kaity Couric. He makes this point best.

Pot is illegal. Pot SHOULD be legal. End of story. Those of you calling his smoking incident immoral and a poor representation of U.S. society should be euthanized so you can never become the parenting failures that are complaining about this. The guy is a god in the water. If he can smoke and continue to make that happen then who cares.

All the people bitching about this just want to take away from the amazing thing he has achieved.
