i live in australia and the climate is out of control, its boiling hot and dry in southern australia while on the north east coast it is flooding.
as i typenow its is 41 degrees C outside

i heard about that today for the first time actually. i went over to my girlfriend's for dinner and her dad (who is from australia) was watching the news and they were worried because their cousins' house burned down and they needed to hide in the cellar to avoid the flames. they are ok now but homeless...

I live in Victoria where all the bushfires are it's crazy.  The other day we got up to 47 degrees the hottest it has ever been in Melbourne.  It was 31 at 3am the other morning this summer is crazy and we've had hardly any rain to wet the ground.

Its been above 40 for the alst 3 days in sydney.. it dropped today to 21... wtf such a huge change but its sooo goood. ++ vibes to victoria

Victorian police have announced a task force to investigate the state's deadly bushfires and say they are confident of making arrests.
The death toll from the bushfire disaster is 173, and is expected to rise as more remains are found in more than 700 burnt-out homes strewn through the 330,000ha so far razed in Australia's worst bushfire disaster.
Police believe the Gippsland fire was deliberately lit, and firebugs could be responsible for more.
Deputy police commissioner Kieran Walshe would not confirm reports police had been given a video tape to assist their investigation.
"We have got some very dedicated investigators working in a strong team to get all the evidence available to enable us to be in position to hopefully identify the perpetrator," Mr Walshe told ABC Television.
"We are feeling confident ... that we are making progress."
Victoria Police announced on Tuesday that Task Force Phoenix would bring together 100 police and investigate all fire-related deaths involved in the devastating fires.

The task force will be headed by Crime Department Assistant Commissioner Dannye Moloney, who was involved in similar investigations during the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires.

Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon said police would pursue anyone who had deliberately lit the fires.

"These people have lit these fires on the worst day that Victoria could have had," Ms Nixon told the Nine Network on Tuesday.

Last Saturday, when the fires broke out, temperatures around the state exceeded 45 degrees, making it the hottest day since records were kept in 1855.

An emotional Prime Minister Kevin Rudd earlier said the firebugs responsible were nothing short of mass murderers.

"What do you say about anyone like that? There are no words to describe it other than mass murder," Mr Rudd said.

High toll

Officials said panic and the freight-train speed of the fire front - driven by 60 mph winds and high temperatures - probably accounted for the unusually high toll.

The death toll has risen by seven since 2am (4am NZT) on Tuesday with three more bodies found at the wiped-out town of Marysville, taking the toll there to 15, and four more bodies at Strathewen where the toll there is now 30, out of a population of 450.

There are now 22 people also confirmed dead at St Andrews, a town with a population of about 1,500 people.

Thirty-five people perished at Kinglake - the greatest single loss of life in these fires - when a ferocious wall of flame swept straight up the heavily timbered Great Dividing Range, taking all in its path.

Geez crazy.. we just had fires lit up here but the temp dropped rapidly over night and they are getting them contained.

hope it only gets better for you guys and let the death toll stay at 171

II am half australian, (I have dual citizenship, canada/australia) so this really saddens me and I really hope they get these under control. Major vibes to my brothers down under.

shits crazy, my best mate lost his house and is now moving up here to stay with me (sydney.)

the estimated dead is now at like 240 i think.
this has brought our country together though, 32 million dollars raised in the last 3 days today it was going up at $1 million a hour.

I'm not one for capital punishment, but in this case the fucking arsonists' should be burnt at the stake or something. This is so horrible to keep reading about in the news each day. The fires were so intense that people could have died without even being burnt, just from the massive heat wave that moves ahead of the fire front melting their lungs. That shit is so scary.

yeah man, did u read the paper this morning? it had interviewed a father, who had just lost his wife and 13 and 9 year old boys to the fire... he said he was on the phone to his wife, and she said she had no where to run, the fire was all around them, so they were told to go back to the house as its safest, they were never seen again and the whole area is now ashes..... shits real rough, i dont think people realise fully here how terrible this is

yea I saw that. that would be so hard to take. Its pretty incomprehensible, so many stories of loss, but at the same time some amazing stories of survival. Like the mum who hid down a wombat hole with her 2 kids until the fire had passed over
