Why do freestylers use short poles?

aye im new to skiing cuz i just switched from snowboarding and i was wondering why u guys use super short poles?

there is no need for long poles in the park. Its not like your skating around or anything. The longer they are the more you have to worry about

shorter poles are useful in moguls because they help you keep forward. Very long poles are used in acro so one is able to perform very technical pole flips and transfers and whatnot. Lastly, nobody uses poles in arials.

"freestyle" if your including mogul's into that its because you need them during compression cause we are so low to the ground. for park...idk

because we realized that poles were fairly useless after people started going no poles, but we hated on that, so we couldnt do it. instead our solution was to use really short poles..


plus tom wallisch did it..



(I use no poles, short poles, and long poles..)

long poles just get in the way. its way easier to catch the little umbrella thing on the nose after landing, and thats never fun. i mean, poles are really just a balance aid, so theres no need for something too long

poles are real good for balance but when they are medium to long length it gets kinda dangerous because what if you are hitting a big jump and your pole goes into the ground plants and hits your face, then you are screwed.

Seriously though, my poles are short because they're more than 6 years old and they haven't broken yet. What can I say, I'm cheap

Everyone generally starts with poles and gets used to them, hence they are used to them
They also help with balance
Long ones get in the way when grabbing or sliding rails

cuzzzz we only use poles in the lift line and sometimes to get speed in the park. So, we don't want a lot of shaft length in our way (yeah I just said that)

take them to a ski shop and get 'em cut down. it takes like 2 minutes, and they will probably do it for free

hahah i get AT LEAST 5 comments a day from lifties, gapers, moms, boarders, even other skiers asking why my poles are so damn short... (when in the ground the go to my knee)

the answer is, i fucked up when cutting them, and i didnt realize a lot of the pole went inside the handle when i reattach it.

i use short poles because the longer ones get caught when im landing spins and break and get bent up. + its easier to stick grabs with less weight in your hands and they give you +10 steez points. but they really suck for all mountain so get the right size first then  just take some short rental polls for park

my friend who did moguls was way ahead of the short poles movement, she also killed the park and that was back in 2004
